My God. The thought hit him like a sudden bucket of ice water. My God, they didn’t just get a com relay that close; they got sensor platforms that close—close enough to read ships’ names off our goddamned hulls—and we never saw a frigging thing!

The implications were terrifying , and he suddenly wished Francisca Yucel was up here in orbit and he was safely down on the planet.

Amaroq, You and I like outside views of how bad the Manties are. I also like outside views of how good their tech is.

An aside:
In my statement I used "bad" to describe how good the Manties are and "good" to describe how good their tech is, which in this case both mean good.

English! How the hell do foreigners learn it? Even I still struggle with it!

I liked that part in the novel too. I loved that the Manties just casually flaunt this information that they shouldn't have (like the ships' names when they've never been told them).

Yeah, English is a toughie. It has rules that never apply to all situations and then exceptions to rules that sometimes don't even apply to the exceptions...Gotta love it.

Admiral [noting yet another Manty tech surprise]:
XO, what's the budget for the ONI?
Vice Admiral: I don't recall exactly, sir. Several billion quatloos.
Admiral: ... What do you suppose they did with all that money?

Shadow of Freedom
“Good evening, Commander Watson.” A blond haired, bearded Manticoran officer replaced Montella on his display. The Manty wore a commodore’s insignia, and his blue eyes were remarkably cold. “I am Sir Aivars Terekhov, Royal Manticoran Navy.”

Every Solarian officer in the Madras Sector knew that name, and Watson felt a solid lump of ice materialize in the pit of his stomach as he recognized it and remembered a star system named Monica.

We are so f---ed, that same little voice whispered.

And for Hutch's daily dose, one from Storm from the Shadows:

I don't care how big she is, she's still a battlecruiser, though, Michelle thought. It's the function, the doctrine, that counts, not just tonnage. And by that meter stick, she's a battlecruiser, all right. One from the dark side of Hell, maybe, but still a battlecruiser. And I've got eight of her.

Shadow of Freedom
So this is the ultra-civilized, oh-so-superior Solarian League's view of "protecting" another planet, she thought grimly. And they have the gall to label the Ballroom terrorists?

“Howdy, Helen,” he said, and his voice had grown much warmer. “Tell me, would it happen the Commodore—and you, of course—would be able to join me at The Rare Sirloin for dinner in a couple of hours, say?” He listened for a moment, still looking out the window, and snorted. “No, I haven’t gone back to my wicked ways, young lady!”

Stephen Westman being freakin' adorable with Helen Zilwicki in Shadow of Freedom.

In Enemy Hands
Let's face it, Cordelia," Saint-Just swiveled those nondescript eyes to his golden-haired colleague, "it gets awfully hard for Public Information to keep rallying public support behind our 'gallant defenders' when we seem to be killing as many of them as the Manties are."

 The man has a very solid argument, don't you think?

Ok, still re-working my way through Storm from the Shadows (I really did love the Shadows trilogy) and here's a couple from Commander Denton, who had an...eventful tour of duty during this book (I hope he's a Captain now and has a newer ship that we'll see sometime again...)

"Very good," Denton said again, and as he leaned back in his chair, his earlier smile was not even a memory. His imagination pictured the Ghost Rider platforms speeding outwards, peering at the emptiness around them, and his eyes were hard with the memory of the last Solarian-occupied star system a Manticoran destroyer force had entered.

Not this time, you bastards, he thought coldly. Not this time.

"That's probably another story, Sir. For one thing, most of the forts are on-line now, and each of them is a hell of a lot tougher than any piece-of-crap Solly superdreadnought ever built. And for another thing, Home Fleet is right on the other side of the terminus. Trust me. If these people want to dance with Duchess Harrington after what she did to the Peeps at Manticore, they're toast."
--Denton to O'Shaughnessy regarding Crandall's intentions.

I posted early on Terekhov's musing about Admiral Crandell "Having us right where we want her," but in the next few pages the conversation between Khumalo and Teekhov is classic military

"As you can see," Khumalo continued, "our friend Crandall at least has the virtue of punctuality."

"I suppose anyone has to have at least some positive qualities, Sir."

"You may have been disabused of that supposition by the time you're my age," Khumalo replied with a thin smile.

"At any rate, assuming she maintains her current acceleration and heads for a zero/zero intercept with the planet, she probably expects to be joining us here in about four hours. Of course, she doesn't expect any of us to still be alive when she gets here."

"Life is full of disappointments, Sir."

Nice dig...through the stacks, way past the Mezzanine section in the library. Chills, again...

Flag In Exile
"Again with all due respect, Your Grace, I think that's a mistake. You're the one who insists we have to learn to treat women with full equality. I believe you're right about that, and I think most of our people are coming around to the same view, whether they like it or not. But I also think you haven't quite learned to do it yourself yet." Benjamin stiffened, and Matthews went on in a calm, measured tone. "I mean no disrespect, but you're trying to protect her. That's a very fine thing, exactly what I would expect from any decent Grayson . . . but would you try quite so hard if she were a man?"

I respected Matthews even more for this moment.
