One obvious survival advantage to having gay relationships is that, when resources are scarce, not having kids to compete with your siblings' kids gives your shared genes an advantage over another tribe that ends up starving themselves out...

There would still need to be a trigger or in times of plenty, the advantage reverses. Has there been any studyies on the corellation between homosexuality and popluation desnity?

Spot research suggests that research into homosexuality in animals is ongoing. I'd guess that, if research hasn't been done yet, it will be in the next ten years or so.

Something that does come up in my scan of some literature on the topic of animal homosexuality is that male-male couples among bird species will happily adopt and raise an egg.

NZ has just voted to accept gay marriage as legal. A momentous day for our country.

Congratulations. Hopefully it will inspire our pollies. Mind you a gay couple in the east of Australia would find it cheaper and quicker to fly to NZ than to travel to Perth or Adelaide, so possibly that will be an option for them?

On a related note, Montana just decriminalized oral and anal sex. That does not mean sex between same sex couples. That law covered everybody, including married hetero couples. Sometimes it is not enough just to legalize something. There are usually other laws intended to reinforce whatever behavior the original law is intended force. And like Murphy's Law, the Law of Unintended Consequences still applies.

Now to see if other countries follow suit.....

Just heard on the radio that they expect about a thousand aussie couples to come over here in the next year or so to get married here as well.

It's pretty much resolved in favour but still has to get nodded through the house of lords. It is on its way.

Just to give those who were interested in this an update:

the bill just survived a motion in the House of Lords to kill the bill, with only 148 voting to kill the bill and 390 in favour of pursuing it. Considering that the house of lords has an elderly demographic and it is overwhelmingly those over 60 who oppose gay marriage, that's good going.
