Is this a mosquito? No. It's an insect spy drone for urban areas, already in production, funded by the US government. It can be remotely controlled and is equipped with a camera and a microphone.

It can land on you, and it may have the potential to take a DNA sample or leave RFID tracking nanotechnology on your skin. It can fly through an open window, or it can attach to your clothing until you take it in your home.

And for all you who automatically say “fake” because you don’t think your government is funding this…

Do some research and NEVER trust Snopes or, your own government!

Big Brother is watching you!

And financing research to do it better, so bye bye privacy.

Frankly, the people commenting in some of those links worry me a bloody sight more than anything the gubmint (US or otherwise) might try to do.

Let's assume for the moment that the current members of the NSA etc are trustworthy individuals, who are working very hard to avoid abusing surveillance technology. The problem in that instance is the future.

These individuals are not a static group. They are constantly changing. In 3-7 years the presidency is due to shift to the Republicans, another 8-12 years after that it is due to shift back to the Democrats. Each shift of administration will result in different individuals at the top. Given human nature sooner or later someone will have the lack of moral integrity to abuse the surveillance if strong penalties (say 20+ years in jail) aren't put in place to stop it.

Those Democrats who defend Lois Lerner should keep this in mind. If they don't send her to prison, you can just about guarantee that some Republican fanatic will do the same things to their organizations in 3-7 years that she did to the Republican organizations. (Note to non-USA readers, she abused the power of the IRS tax regulations to block political activity of Republican leaning groups before the last election).

I think the rest of the world trusts the american government in as much as we expect them to screw up everything at some point or another, no matter their side.

Not sure what scares me more. The prospect of a competent Big Brother pulling the strings on all of us, or alternatively the more likely scenario that we are all blundering aimlessly through life.
Even with supercomputer help I doubt that any government can really keep track on all of our activities, and wonder why they would want to.

;) Nope. But, as we Aussies are prone to say, the government (yours and mine) "couldn't organize a p###-up in a brewery".

My observation is while they "couldn't organize a p###-up in a brewery" the unintended consequences of their p### poor legislation rather often F###s up the common man.

And don't forget that these organizations are composed of individuals. Even if 99.9% would never misuse their access that still leaves 0.1% who would. Everyone has met a person or two who are sociopaths. Imagine those individuals with this kind of access and what they would do with it if they were sure they would get away with it.

Not to mention jobs with power (Police, Military, Politics, and lawyers) tend to draw psychopaths like flies to sh#t.
