Annachie: Thank you for pulling this thread down into the mud of personnel zingers. But ... you got me a good one this time and thank you. I have only been here in Josephine Country Oregon USA, 43N, 123W for 28+ years.
Suppose that makes me a youngster. Lots of my friends down here were born here. Natural born citizens. Some of them are 25 years old. This naturally gives them more bragging rights. I stand corrected Annachie. For those who do not understand the compass course this post has taken, the State of Oregon USA is actually made up of two distinct demographic groups. In the North Wast part of Oregon, way up in the NW corner, we have ... The liberal tree huggers and fish kissers. Very liberal. Some say socialist. But they make up over 2/3rds of the State's population and they call the economic and political shots. We are out voted by liberals and socialists. The rest of Oregon generally, (always?) is very conservative. The exception would be the Willamette Valley which also is very socialist. The rest is rural/remote and very American. Portland OR is very weird indeed. I now have watched two, (2) voters forums to determine whom to vote for for Josephine County government. So far not so good. There is only one candidate whom I have known for 28 years who is a decent conservative choice. Thus our problems. We have little tax base for County government. That is good. No new taxes please. We would rather go without government infrastructure than pay more property taxes like on our homes. No thank you. This point of view is the majority view in the Illinois Valley and Cave Junction. Southern Josephine County. Over 7 times we have voted "NO NEW TAXES". Yep. Which means no law enforcement. Which means natural law. Natural law means we take care of things ourselves. Our very good understanding Sheriff understands? Maybe. Good guy. Natural law means local social solutions. This means guns guns guns. Now it this more clear? This is our own situation. This does NOT include over taxation for schools. Different subject. 70% of our property tax total goes to public education. We are working on that. But natural law here. This means guns, guns, guns. I am a responsible citizen. Do no harm. Do not go looking for trouble. Am trying to pass it all forward. Responsible. But ... I do carry a gun for personal protection. Licensed. Perfectly legal. Live in peace but be prepared. |

Small joke and cultural differences then.
For an Australian small town, lets just say that when I tell locals where I live they know the house as where someone who died 20 years ago lived. That at 47 and only having been here for a year chances are I wont live long enough to be considered a local. Sent from my SM-G920I using Tapatalk ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I'm currently holidaying at Norfolk Island, a speck in the middle of the Pacific, an Australian Territory, soon to be incorporated into our Commonwealth.
No income tax, 3 x 6 miles, 2k residents, very laid back laws, cars never locked or keys out. Only guns at the target range. Current temp 20 to 23 degrees. Two police but no crime. When you die volunteers hand dig a grave, and you are buried for free. Utopia except they have been slowly going broke, due to dropoff in tourists after the GFC, hence the incorporation. |

When I went to work at Warwick (Queensland town of 9k), the locals treated me as an outsider, when I proved that I was actually born there, the response was "But your parents weren't".

We used to see automotive bumper stickers that read: "Native Born Oregonian Since XXXX" Whatever year they moved here. I moved out of socialist California in the autumn of 1987. Political refugee. Just a youngster here myself.
I do have one good friend who was born here in Oregon USA in 1944. Her mom was also born in Oregon in around 1920. Then her mom was born here around 20 years earlier. My lady friend's ancestors came across the Western American wilderness from St. Joseph Missouri, (territory then?) in 1845-46. There wagon train was among the first. They only lost 3 people on the entire trip. So that makes HER a multi generation native Oregonian. Seems their family kept; (edit: many) journals. I wonder if she would let me read them. I bet they had interesting lives indeed. (edit: They used guns also.) Last edited by HB of CJ on Sun May 08, 2016 12:20 am, edited 1 time in total.

Missouri became a state in 1820 so it was a state in 1845.

Missouri was a state. Thank you. They only lost 3 folks on the entire trip from St. Joseph, Missouri to the Willamette Valley, Oregon Territory. They drowned attempting to cross the Colombia River.
Allegedly they did have two, (2) times they had to shoot seriously at Native Americans. We do not know today if it was a serious attack or not. It may be in the many family journals. Would make good reading. Their diet was suspect. Just some hard rations and primarily game animals shot along the way. Not much in the way of a balanced diet. Guns guns guns were needed to put the food, (what it was) on the table. Wow! |
