Manticore is a binary system and Sphinx and Manticore both orbit the primary star of the Manticore Binary System. Do we have any textev on the other star?
Also, is anything militarily done with Thorson, the single moon? As in, are there any fixed defenses on Thorsen? An Aside: I recently found out, much to my surprise, that Binary Systems are the norm in the Universe. Single star systems like Sol are rather unusual. Go figure. Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. From House of Steel (invaluable book):
Nothing I can remember; only thing HoS says about it is that it is smaller than Earth's moon.
True that. SOme systems, IIRC, can have 3 or 4 stars in a very complex 'dance'. Not to mention stars sharing a system with a black hole... ***********************************************

It is believed that black holes are at the center of every major galaxy. Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. It is mentioned in passing MA2 that Thorson has a small missile base. |

There are star systems with as many as 7 or 8 stars. Some are quite complex, such as 1 pair of stars close together, orbited by another star farther out, orbited by yet another close pair of stars even further out, and another star orbiting that pair. (That is an approximation, of course, setting the most massive pair of stars as the center.) Astronomers are considering a standard nomenclature for naming elements of a multiple star system, with combinations of capital letters, small letters, and numerals, which reflects which stars effectively orbit which. --------------------------------------------

Also, of course, Gryphon orbits the other star (Manticore-B). I didn't go look for it, but I believe there was a little text about the Manticore-B system in Field of Dishonor when the Marines are looking for a ride over there to pay an expencted and very unofficial visit to Denver Summervale; the professional duelist. (linked to a discussion about the life support endurance of a pinnace full of Marines being insufficient to make the trip through n-space) Actually there are 7 planets orbiting Manticore A, and another 7 orbiting Manticore B [all from House of Steel] |

Which makes you wonder about the conditions that allowed such extreme formations - as interesting as "how the heck does Neptune's moon Triton end up orbiting in the wrong direction?" So odd that conspiracy theories abound akin to it being placed there by alien technology - for reasons that are as varied as the theory itself. Son, your mother says I have to hang you. With Honorverse weaponry - even normal tech available to the average consumer - that could be used as murder weapons probably makes it difficult for crime fighters. There are probably a plethora of ways to completely destroy a body. No body, weak case. Power tools with incredible power to completely pulverize bone in the average garage. Sheesh!

I really must read "House of Steel." We have never seen the missile base used. What are the tactical/strategic reasons for there to be a missile base on the moon? Blackbird was a special case. Before GRAM and Ghost Rider, system defense missiles had to be ground based; there were no pods and the missiles were too large for ship-board deployment. In modern times, there is probably some value as a training base or secondary command center, or something. It's probably NOT actually useful as a missile base, per se, in the current combat environment. .
