GL max range is less then effective range for energy weapons. So you need to somehow survive to get there. As the Haven CO mentioned, right before a DN killed him and his BCs, BCs don't do well against DN/SD scale missiles.

The main problem Fearless had was that equipping her with the Grav Lance and Energy Torps gutted her missile capability and conventional energy weapon. Like I said the idea would work much better on a ship whose conventional weapons array wouldn't be as crippled by the sacrifices made to get the Grav Lance and Energy Torpedoes in so the Grav Lance and Energy Torp tactic would be an option rather than a necessity. Obviously someone in universe agreed with me or the Homer class wouldn't have the Grav Lance and Energy Torps plus the conventional weapons they do. The Homers can hold their own in a conventional battle against other ships in their weight class but they have the option of a Grav Lance/Energy Torp strike if their captains see the chance for one. |

Jurgenson was head of ONI during the High Ridge administration, and got dismissed from the RMN as a result of catastrophic failures. I don't think LeMaitre ever showed up again in the books. All I remember is that Kuzak was critical of her lack of exercising command in a tactical situation. |

And now for something completely different.....
![]() There has been much discussion about the Hemphill-Foraker relationship, with more than a little speculation that the relationship might be more than just friendly (wink, wink, nudge nudge, know what I mean? ![]() Well, here's another possibility. From House of Steel:

If you like that fantasy, Hutch, you're more than welcome to enjoy it while Sonja and Shannon carry on falling desperately in love. ![]() I would like to see Sam again, though! He hasn't been around for awhile. If nothing else, I suspect he and Shannon would get on like a house on fire. ~*~

I wonder how treecats would handle gay love. "This is interesting," said the People.
About Shannon, wouldn't it be nice if she had enough free time for some formal classroom teaching, like Honor? She needs to pass those skills along, like Honor. Why can't Shannon have her own protégé, her own Abby? Does the RHN have an equivalent of the Crusher? Since they are all buddy buddy now and sharing technology, do you think it prudent to share teaching resources as well? Students from Haven can take an Extraplanetary-Interdisciplinary-Discipline-Course. (mouthful) EIDC. Credited of course. ![]() The RMN could help Haven with their own Crusher. Exchange students. Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. I doubt Haven's naval academy will need the kind of revamping Grayson's Isaiah Mackenzie did, and I also doubt that any Havenites will be going through Saganami Island, since the Havenite academy shouldn't have to shut down for revamping. I also suspect they have their own version of The Crusher, but if they don't, we could conceivably see young Havenite lieutenants being run through ATC until Haven can get their own up and running. (I assume that anyone with a proven command record won't need it, but some might choose to do it anyway.) As for Shannon - once the GA has shattered the SL and turned the MesAlign into subatomic particles, I could see her possibly teaching. (Assuming she can teach - she may be one of those geniuses who are completely incapable of it, which isn't unheard-of. I doubt she is, though, given her work with Bolthole.) But take her off R&D before the GA has come out victorious? Never. Sooner would they beach Sonja and tell her to stop coming up with all these crazy inventions! ![]() ~*~

I see your point Rose. But I wasn't thinking in terms of have to, but more in terms that students would want to enroll in courses off campus. I elected to take chemistry off-campus. I failed it twice at my Uni. Too damn demanding. Chemistry students were flunking out wholesale. At any rate, who wouldn't want a chance at Saggy Isle. As far as Shannon teaching, of course I was fantasizing about the future. And it has nothing to do with my fantasy as her prized pupil, sitting up front as she sits on the desk. Haven has been fighting Manticore for 20+ years with inferior tech.
I'd be more than shocked if the Haven Navy didn't have a crusher program of its own, and one that is every bit the equal, or superior, than the RMN. |

I'd be shocked as well, yet I don't recall any definitive textev ever even mentioning it in passing. In fact, I always assimilated all of the talk about Saggy Isle and the unprecedented Crusher as being not only a one of a kind set of hardware, but a one of a kind concept.
