dam were . . . perplexed by my choices. And as for my own clan's memory singers—!> She flicked the tip of her tail as a human might have rolled her eyes, and Wind of Memory surprised them all—including herself, Branch Leaper suspected—with a bleek of laughter. All eyes turned to her, and she flicked her ears.

Interesting, informative and entertaining treecat exchanges. Makes me become even more entrenched in that the treecat movie appearances absolutely positively has to be sweet and cuddly, else all will be lost.

Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense

I think so (scratching his head) but not so sure about my net connection today.

<You did not have "the potential," sister-of-choice,> Songstress said, speaking up for the first time. <You are a memory singer, whether you have claimed or accepted the duties of one or not, and this is something you know as well as I. If it would have been wrong or unjust of Sun Leaf Clan's elders and memory singers to deny you the right to bond with a human, was it not also wrong of you to refuse the responsibility to your clan which comes with the mind voice and the depth of memory you own?>

My 12-year old niece brought this to my attention. She emailed me saying that the depth of the conversation in this passage is a strong indication that treecats' intelligence is even greater than many humans.

I guess that makes me really rare - I was in the Air Force. Couldn't stand coffee before I went in, and came out still hating the stuff. Nary a drop passed my lips.

Oddly enough, when it was my turn to run the squadron snack bar, my coffee got quite a bit of praise. Don't know what I was doing different - I just followed the instructions on the can and kept the coffee maker and pots clean.

You may be surprised to find out how many people do not EITHER follow instructions OR keep the pots clean.

That.

I don't think it's possible to f**k up a pot of coffee as badly as has been demonstrated by getting the proportions of coffee to water wrong, i.e. Not following the directions. It's either weak (boo) or ... Coffee.

You may have noticed the difference between a fresh pot and one that's sat around hot for a couple of hours? Oxidation is not your friend. Especially with the oils left on the brewing gear, when the next pot is made. Skip the lather and rinse to the repeat, and some nasty stuff gets leached out of the innards into the next pot.

But I've always wondered, given the simplicity of cleanliness and the vitriol that military coffee gets, if they brew with something other than actual coffee. Although it might be possible if you grind it fine and then set it out to dry for a few months. That might do it.

I'm sure Mac has the principles down cold.[/quote]

You are overlooking the quality of the coffee also. When I was in the USN we had cans of coffee in 15lbs and 30lbs cans that IIRC cost 20-25$ and 45$ a can respectively. This when a 3lbs can of the cheep in store brand cost $5-8 and the more expensive name brands cost $9-12.

There were questions the People simply did not ask of one another, but they were few and fell into areas which had been considered deeply private in even the oldest of memory songs.

Oh my, if you are the target of treecat gossip, they never forget it. This gives a whole new meaning to heard it through the grapevine.

My niece at work again. This kid's mind is sharp and funny.

I suspect that exceptional intelligence would be a prerequisite for memory singers - and, as Laughs Brightly himself put it:

<There is more to see in some two-legs' heads than others.>

From Cauldron, but I don't think it spoils anything. It's just a couple of Mesans checking out the handiwork of the new guy in town.
"Too clean," he said.
Tamara Hess made a face. "You call this clean? I'm sure glad you're not my janitor bot."

Imagined conversation:
Admiral [noting yet another Manty tech surprise]:
XO, what's the budget for the ONI?
Vice Admiral: I don't recall exactly, sir. Several billion quatloos.
Admiral: ... What do you suppose they did with all that money?

Yep. There is nothing in this world that someone will not make a little worse and sell for a little cheaper. You've demonstrated the intent in my last bit above, I just wasn't clear on how it was achieved.
