Changer of Worlds
Under normal circumstances, Laughs Brightly would have become a member of Sun Leaf Clan, for it was customary for the male to become a member of his mate's clan on those rare occasions when People mated with anyone other than members of their own birth clans.

Interesting. Ve-dy in-te-resting. In treecat society, when you marry err bond you don't just lose your last name, you lose your clan. And it's the male and not the female. I understand why. It's out of consideration for the importance of memory singers.

Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense

Indeed--If you recall from A Rising Thunder, the only reason Sorrow Singer survived the Oyster Bay strike was that she was visiting the clan (Moonlight Dancing?) that her litter-brother was marrying into.

And for my quote of the day, from House of Steel:

“I suspect that eventually a lot of money’s going to flow into it, and I want you to begin socking away cash for it now, Lord Pierce. Every loose dollar you can find gets earmarked for Gram, and I intend to press Parliament for a substantial increase in discretionary covert spending to come up with even more funding. This is going to be completely separate from BuWeaps’ open R and D programs, but any funding we can skim off the open R and D and funnel into Gram, gets skimmed. Understand me on this—if I have to dispose of Crown Lands and fund this out of the Privy Purse, that’s what I’ll do. We’re looking at the short end of a disastrous war of attrition unless we come up with a qualitative equalizer. I don’t know what we’ll find, and for that matter I can’t guarantee we will find our own Gram, but I can guarantee that if we don’t find it, we lose. And, My Lords, the House of Winton does not lose when the security and the freedom of the Star Kingdom of Manticore and its citizens are at stake.”
--I know he had to die so that Elizabeth could inherit the throne and become the beloved character that she is, but damn--the stories that weren't told because we lost Roger Michael Danton Maxwell Winton, King Roger III, of the Star Kingdom of Manticore.

This is why I've come to love the one-liners thread so much. One-liners has come to be a sort of book discussion. I love book discussions because you get to hear someone else's take on things, how they assimilated the same information available to you. And this...

Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense

<I greet you, sister-of-choice,> Wind of Memory went on, turning to Laughs Brightly's new mate. <I had not expected Laughs Brightly to find a mate among the People, particularly given the strength of his bond to Dances on Clouds. Yet I taste the strength of the bond you share with him, and his mind glow has grown still stronger since last he was among us. It is a powerful bonding you share, and I wish you joy of it.> <

Men, you see? Love not only makes the heart grow fonder, but it makes the mind grow stronger! :D

He was by all accounts (and what little we get to see of him) a pretty amazing monarch. Aside from the whole secret R & D project he set up and the naval buildup he initiated (that saved the SKM's butt) his insistence on beginning to train Elizabeth for the throne so early even though prolong should've guaranteed him a long rule was a stroke of genius.

<I thank you, Senior Singer,> Golden Voice replied, and Branch Leaper felt a shudder of shock ripple through the assembled elders and all the other members of Bright Water Clan who had followed them to Wind of Memory's nest as that incredible mind voice poured through them. Wind of Memory twitched bolt upright, her ears standing fully erect, and Songstress actually hissed beside her. Not in challenge, but in disbelief, for Golden Voice's mind voice sang in their minds with the pure, sweet power of one of the humans' great bells. It was easily more powerful than Wind of Memory's, yet Wind of Memory held her position as Bright Water's senior singer precisely because her own mind voice was so strong. <

I'm talking Minnie Ripperton strong.

From Beginnings and Honor taking out the peak bears in the end:

She was calm. A sense of panic, of horror, hovered about her, frantic with concern for the treecats, but it couldn’t touch her. It was a part of her, but it was apart from her, as well. Her hands were steady, her breathing almost normal, and her flashing thoughts were clear, clean, and icy cold.

Perhaps the earliest moment when we know that Honor can eat so-called death-rides for breakfast.

Hot Damn! I have gotta git my ass back to the future err The Beginnings! Can't wait to read it!

Thanks for the nice trailer Amaroq.

dam were . . . perplexed by my choices. And as for my own clan's memory singers—!> She flicked the tip of her tail as a human might have rolled her eyes, and Wind of Memory surprised them all—including herself, Branch Leaper suspected—with a bleek of laughter. All eyes turned to her, and she flicked her ears.

Interesting, informative and entertaining treecat exchanges. Makes me become even more entrenched in that the treecat movie appearances absolutely positively has to be sweet and cuddly, else all will be lost.
