And one group from Cauldron of Ghosts (again, No spoilers--I've deleted names to keep from giving anything away.

..... ..... had just been initiated into the Hey-look-Victor’s-improvising club.

......was now discovering that the Hey-look-Victor’s-improvising club was not a fan club.

.....was discovering himself on the precipice of joining another informal club, the one called Hey-look-Victor’s-sucking-everybody-into-his-schemes-like-a-black-hole-again.

“........-.......-Cachat-whoever the hell you are, you are f****** insane.”
Thereby joining another Victor club. Also not a fan club.

And finished off by a character we already know (and who knows Victor:

“He changed the plan again?” ..... threw up her hands. “Why do we even bother making plans at all?”

Can't wait to read CoG. Thanks for giving me a taste Hutch. What are the spoiler rules, like what is the grace period, after which open discussions are ok?

Apparently males are the same in any sentient species. Just can't resist taking a shot at an acquaintance for finally finding a girl.

From HAE:

"An Andy?" Stellingetti shook her head. "Wonderful. Just wonderful! Why would an Andy be maneuvering to match vectors with a Manticoran with a battlecruiser on its a$$?"

I liked Marie Stellingetti. One of the earliest likable and competent Havenite characters introduced. She was genuinely repentant at the idea that she'd just thrown a whole salvo of missiles had a ship full of civilians that she mistook for a battlecruiser. She respected her opponents and actually had a conscience. And then she was taken out by Honor and Wayfarer with a single broadside.

I've been wanting to find time to reread HAE, because, well because everything. But mostly because of Stacy Hauptman. I just loved Stacy. I also like the way Honor was approached to command the Q-Ship.

There's also a lot of important foreign or secondary characters who either get introduced or more fleshed out in that book: Warner Caslet, Admiral Giscard, Eloise Pritchart, Shannon Foraker, Chien-lu Anderman, Stacey and Klaus Hauptman...

The relevant portion from the Rules are:
For specific content on a book that has yet to be released, or for a book that has been released in paper format (either hardcover or softcover, whichever is first) for less than a month, all discussion topics shall have in the topic title "SPOILERS" somewhere in it. I'm not expecting people to figure out exactly when a month is up, but just keep it in mind before you can drop the SPOILER warning. By specific content I am including the snippets Eric Flint provides on his website (and is usually crossposted to the Bar and here).
- Any speculative topics and and topics concerning books that have been out for more than 1 month will not be required to have anything in their topic titles.

(Oh, and I agree, those brief quotes from CoG are great! Nice teaser to whet the appetite before I get the book! :D )

I wrote a response but SWM beat me to it.

And one last to whet everyone's appetite...

“If you’ll pardon my saying so, Your Grace,” Thandi Palane said a bit dryly, “I doubt most of your uncle’s follies could outshine the one you pulled at a place called Cerberus.”
-At a rather interesting Dinner party with a guest list..well, you'll just have to see.... 8-)

When it comes to coffee in the military there are five grades of the stuff. In descending order:

Coffee

Java

Joe

Mud

and last but not least

Nile river water at low tide on wash day

By my extensive research the USN and this includes the USMC never gets above grade 3 about 90% of the time and only gets to grade 2 the rest of it. Warning! Warning! never ever drink mess-deck coffee between 0400 and 0500, This stuff is so strong it will melt the spoon (and maybe the cup) and etch glass.

For the USAF it spends most of its time hopping from grade 2 and 3 with occasional jumps to grade 1.

The USA is with out a doubt is all over the place when it comes to coffee. MRE coffee absolutely never gets above grade 5 unless you also mix in your MRE cocoa mix and then you get MocaJoe.

As for my self I developed an allergy to coffee during my military service and have not partaken a cup of coffee in almost 25 years

This may in fact be the absolute best part of a pretty damn great book.

(This type of gag also shows up in the 1632/Ring of Fire series, with which I have recently become absolutely, positively obsessed and which is also written (mostly) by Eric Flint. And it is just as funny there as it is here.)
