From HAE:

Warnecke swallowed, eyes wide as he realized he'd finally met a killer even more deadly than he.

Gotta love Honor's aggressive negotiations with a .45 automatic.

The range was insanely short for modern warships, dropping towards one which could be measured in hundreds of kilometers and not thousands, and no sane naval officer would even have contemplated engaging at such close quarters. Nor had either Dunecki or Bachfisch planned on doing any such thing, for each had expected to begin and end the battle with a single broadside which would take his enemy completely by surprise. But whatever they'd planned, their ships were here now, and no one in any navy trained its officers for combat maneuvers in such close proximity to an enemy warship. And because of that, Anders Dunecki, for all of his experience, was completely unprepared for what War Maiden actually did.

Ok, RFC, this I don't understand. I realize that this situation is unique in that it is rare, but it seems inevitable. Sometimes the only tactical maneuver available is to close with the enemy ship, as Honor did in her deathride.

In all of an officer's training, and all of the class instruction and simulations driven into students, I can't imagine that these type maneuvers wouldn't be pre-requisites. It's akin to studying chess to become a grand master but ignoring the 'end game.' These such in-close proximity maneuvers should be freshman year Tactics 101. Intuitively, they seem the same type maneuvers as Top Gun--The United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program. Has the edge been lost?

Sure, all navies teach graser-range tactics. But this wasn't graser-range, or even close range. Graser-range is 400,000 km (500,000 km now). Close range is maybe half that. A few thousand km is knife-fighting range. This is like suddenly turning to fire a cannon broadside at boarding range against a South Seas pirate.

A real world analogy would be the First battle of Guadalcanal, when combat took place at ranges of 2500yds down to 50yds at night. This is from ships capable of firing 19000yds for DD and CLAA 26000yds for CL and 30000+ for CA and BB.

That battle has been described as; A bar brawl after the lights had been shot out.

"I'm well aware of the sorts of rumors which have been circulating around the fleet," Tourville said. "Some of them have been so wild as to be outright ridiculous. For example, the one that says we're going to launch a direct attack on the Manticoran home system in response to Lovat. The very idea is preposterous."

Now, let me brief you on a little something called Operation Beatrice . To have been a fly on the wall when Tourville's officers received their new orders...

The female glow was the stronger of the two, of course. It almost always was, and yet it had to be very powerful to be stronger in this case.

The female mind is stronger, even in a treecat clan. So there isn't just rampant emotions swirling around in a maelstrom--there's actually a method to the madness. :o

Changer of Worlds
The People were less concerned about measuring things like the passage of time than were the two-legged humans with whom they shared their world, but Branch Leaper judged that no more than two or three hands of the human's "minutes" could have elapsed before the pair upon whom he waited came into sight.

Interesting that treecats can estimate the passage of time. Interesting as well is the time applied in this passage as a measure of distance. Treecat mind sense have at least a two hour treecat hiking distance. Of course we all know from other passages, such as the passage regarding the destruction of Blackrock Clan that a treecat clan in close proximity, Moonlight Dancing clan felt their deaths. This all makes me wonder about the maximum distance of treecat mind glows. Does anyone know whether the distance limitation has been definitively given?

Changer of Worlds
It was not unheard of for a mated pair to travel through a strange clan's territory, but good manners usually required that they warn that clan of their presence. Not that the People took such journeys amiss—except, perhaps, he admitted, during times of great famine at the very end of the cold days of a turning, when even a single pair of additional hunters might make the difference between life or death for the clan's kittens. But that was rare, and usually it was simply a matter of courtesy.

Treecat's presence of morals, scruples and values established.

This passage also shed light on the passage regarding Honor and Nimitz enroute to Protector's Palace and Nimitz leaping from Honor's side to stalk a near chipmunk. Nimitz stated that he had to keep his abilities sharpened. In light of this passage that passage has more impact.

Indeed I do. I also enjoy the visual imagery incited when Honor set that baby off. Can you imagine a world accustomed to the benign whine of pulsar fire then someone comes along and set off an archaic chemical propelled weapon that barks like a huge dog? Let's call it, the excrement factor!

That would be Dueling Grasers at twenty paces with shield. Can we say Naval Ship jeet kune do? Honor understood it. She quickly recognized the enemy's tactics of constantly bombarding her wedge, preventing her from rolling ship. Yet she knew what she was going to do to counter that tactic and the fact that she was outgunned and outrunned! Cunning! Honor learned that from somewhere. And she was a snotty nosed Midshipwoman.

I simply feel that the Alpha lines can become highly trained militarists.

"HAE" as some people like to say.

I prefer...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honor_Among_Enemies

It's a scene in the (Marine's) gym, after Honor's "Workout" (if you can call it that). She then greets Aubrey Wanderman (one of my favorite characters, along with Horace Harkness). Aubrey's there for his own sort of a "workout" with Horace and a Marine.
