Did Mizawa honestly believe that a pinhead-sized "star kingdom" consisting of only a single star system up until only a very few years before could produce an R&D establishment that could actually outperform the League's? God only knew what the man was going to come up with to worry about next! Invasions of brain-devouring hordes from Andromeda, perhaps? Or possibly a deadly revolt by the galaxy's cocker spaniels, intent on devouring their masters one toe at a time?

Imagined conversation:
Admiral [noting yet another Manty tech surprise]:
XO, what's the budget for the ONI?
Vice Admiral: I don't recall exactly, sir. Several billion quatloos.
Admiral: ... What do you suppose they did with all that money?

"Oh, shit." "We are so screwed."

The second are thoughts of one Commodore Aivars Terekhov in Mission of Honor, as Admiral Crandall is leading her ships into the Spindle system.

"You just keep right on coming, Admiral Crandall, Terekhov thought coldly. You don't even begin to realize just how much you've got us exactly where we want you . . . but you're about to find out."

Nice!
Terekhov and Tourville are two one-of-a-kinds.
Together they would be explosive like TnT.

In fact they should have a beer together!

"You're mad, My Lady." Major LaFollet's voice was low but intense as the cutter approached Warnecke's shuttle. "This is the most insane thing youv'e ever done -- and that takes some doing."

HAE

It seems that Honor finds insane things to keep doing ;)

Oh, I think Tourville and Terekhov should have far more than a beer together.

I'm thinking fleet command.

"After all," he added, and gave the Captain a huge smile as he and Aubrey ended in unison, "this ship has a fine doctor."

HAE after Gunny Hallowell and Honor finished sparring and Wanderman is to continue training to fight.

Of course Shannon's "Oops" does rate as the best not only in the Honorverse but the entire universes both real and imagined.

I was under the impression the SKM R&D was built on 3 principles:

1) gather information on as much original research as possible. Use a lot of SL research gathered by ONI and reservists in the merchant fleet. This means SKM is using the SL R&D establishment far more effectively than the ISLN or the SL Federal System.

2) Combine, mix and match technologies until you have something worthwhile. Mini fusion plants, grave com, baffles on MDMs and improved inertial compensators are just a few examples of mix and match technologies that create a whole type of weapon.

3) Test and retest then modify to suit. Apply real world to evaluation and subsequent design criteria. This does require occasional practical input from line officers.....

According to our experts, there is no way they can build missiles that can do that.

Hence, the entire point of the beer dear! :D

I can just imagine their brainstorming sessions!

Another doozy of an overstated one-liner!

"And the biggest frigging "battlecruisers" in the galaxy won't help them if they ever come face to face with Battle Fleet!"

From House of Steel:

"The day will come when we find ourselves at war with the People's Republic of Haven," she told them softly, almost terribly, "and when it does, the Navy my father built, the Star Kingdom he prepared, will meet the Peoples Navy anywhere in space it can be found, and...we...will...destroy...it"

The treecats don't call Elizabeth Soul of Steel for nothing.

" It's that you get so furious with them that you wind up climbing on your high moral horse so you can ride them under the hooves of your righteous fury. But when you close your knight errant's helmet, the visibility through that visor is just a little limited, isn't it?"

Emily talking to her husband Hamish Alexander in War of Honor. I love the description of Hamish in this passage- as a knight who cannot see out of his helmet.
