Curses, I had it down as the first. Grrrrr.

Quite a few of the "local" scenes got me in SoF-- and the end with Mike recording that letter for Elizabeth. But you're right, those were definitely not on the obvious-heartstring level of a lot of his other stuff.

That's why I'm so nervous about favorite characters dying in upcoming books-- so far, everything's going so well that he must be saving up for something really nasty.

I was just about to respond to you Hutch with something similar, but NortonIDaughter sort of hit the nail on the head before me. It happens , when pesky little details err nails are left protruding.

The problem with heartsting moments is that they require fodder. For me, that fodder can be something benign, can be the result of laughter or joy, as is what happened when I recall that entire exchange that occured when Honor dispatched people to visit ACS control in Basilisk Station when that jackass Young abandoned her to fail. Those following exchanges when ACS Control found out how much a 'cut above' Honor was compared to everyone that proceeded her, and later when Dame Estelle (shhh...looking around for rose) met Honor and the exhange that followed and the enduring relationship easily forged; those represent heartsting strummed tears of joy.

But oftentimes, heartstring moments are the result of a catastrophy, as of someone dying. Reverend Sullivan. McKeon. So we have to be careful what we wish for.

Another consideration, if I were the author and could wield the quill so real, would have to be the cumulative effect on my own heartstrings and sanity. For an author to be able to write such heartfelt moments would require his total immersion within the soul of the characters producing a result generic to all readers, yet that kind of emotional depth, IMIO (in my intuitive opinion) must also be emotionally and physically exhausting. RFC may need time to...recharge. Hence moments of wielding the quill genteel.

Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense

From War of Honor

I enjoyed this passage as well. It showcases the very formidable strategic and tactical social acumen possessed by Anton.

I can still see the ghost of Lady Cathy Montaigne dancing about, threatening to burst with joy.

after that word from our sponsors...
“I mean that this terminus is now closed to all Solarian-registry shipping, except for courier vessels and those registered to recognized interstellar news services. It will remain closed to all Solarian traffic until further notice.”
“This is never going to stand,” Pálffi said, almost conversationally. “You and your pissant cruisers are going to need a hell of a lot more than one waller to stand up to what’s going to be headed your way as soon as Sol finds out about this.”
“By the strangest coincidence, Captain Pálffi, there’s quite a lot more headed this way,” Magellan informed him. “Although, to be honest, I don’t think we’re going to need as much more as you may believe.”
The ammunition ship HMS Bandolier emerged from the terminus, stuffed to the deckheads with missile pods and additional Mark 16 missiles for his cruisers, while he was speaking, and he smiled.

“Sure it will.” Pálffi snorted contemptuously. “I’m sure Battle Fleet’s wallers will just be scared to death of your cruisers, Commodore!”
“They will be if they’ve bothered to read the reports about what happened at Spindle,” Magellan replied calmly. “These are exactly the same class of cruisers which captured or destroyed Fleet Admiral Crandall’s entire fleet, Captain Pálffi.”

My apologies to all for the unmarked spoilers. Yes, it was Cauldron of Ghosts. Unfortunately, I got the dates mixed up and though it had already been released...

Apology accepted I'm sure Invictus. Mistakes happen.
I personally don't think it's such a big deal, as you didn't give anything away, on the other hand some people may be a bit put off anyway. Reminds me of another of my father's sayings...

Thank you. Yes you would have liked my father; everyone did, both my mother and father. My sister's friends liked my father too much and often developed a crush, much to the dismay of my five sisters. I suppose my father was a handsome man, but his personality was the catcher...bubbly, happy. I suppose when one is married to the sweetest most beautiful woman in the world one would have a tendency to be easygoing.

His sons on the other hand had to contend with their friends constant goggling after their mother. If you've ever been an eleven-year old and have witnessed the lost puppy dog look in all of your friends eyes about your mom, then you feel what I mean.

Every time I'd scold my friends they'd say something like 'Why are you so angry at us? It's not our fault your mom is so beautiful.' Even though an eleven-year old wanted it to be their fault, it wasn't. Since then every time I hear the phrase 'Don't hate me because I'm beautiful' reminds me of my mom.

My father had many profound sayings. He'd often sit you down and let you sulk in the silence before he'd speak where often something profound would emerge. It is how he taught us.

Yow, a forumite, made me feel proud and asked to use an earlier saying of my father's as his signature...

Son, do not cater to the common belief that a man has to earn your respect. That is not true. You should give every man respect right from the start. What a man has to earn is your continued respect.

Son, you are not God so I don't expect you to walk on water, but do you think you can learn to stand on land?

one of the very first things he taught his boys...
I only have two rules. One, never hit my wife or my wife's daughters. Two, transgressions of this rule will be met with severe punishment. Three, if you find yourself at rule number three, you've gone too far. See rule number two.

I don't care if you boys kill each other. Just do it outside! But when your mother finds out about it, the survivor of the battle won't survive the war. Guess who'll be leading the charge.

One bad apple don't spoil the whole bunch. But it will always get the worm executed.

He had many more. Thus was my father. Memories are our key to immortality.

I think I'll honor my father and use one as my forum signature.
