This would be an issue and perhaps raises some questions for how the Gbaba didn't find Earth unless they only care about other spacefaring civilization rather than just civilizations. However, those emissions would only radiate outward at the speed of light and so shouldn't be much of an issue for Safehold who will presumably advance rather quickly once that pesky orbital bombardment system is dealt with. I would imagine there wouldn't be much in the way of noticeable chemicals that Safehold could manage to make in a pre-electric tech base either, so that window would basically start as the bombardment system goes away.
As for the bombardment system, I would imagine that is not looking for a chemical signature in the atmosphere and then just blasting away for the very good reason that if there are detectable levels of some artificial chemical in the air, that sort of thing is almost certainly too widespread to just give the Armageddon Reef treatment to. I think it can be safely assumed that the command crew wouldn't have a situation set up where the punishment for advancing too far is the total annihilation of the human race. They were nuts, but nuts in an understandable way after watching the Federation fall and are doing their insanity in a wildly overprotective effort to try to hide forever, not to end humanity for straying from their straitjacket. |

What is now "Armageddon Reef " was a targeted area, not part of some general devastation. It was a home of the people who did not agree with the direction the colony was taking.
The bombardment system is probably more structured to hit specific targets that meet the criteria of exceeding certain limits of tech. Remember that it is, in part, automated with some version of an AI monitoring the planet. It is presumed in the story line that there is some manual control- probably located in the facility underneath the Temple- that would allow the operator to selectively hit targets with a very high degree of accuracy as well as some more limited area targeting. Do we know if the AI could detect a facility that was producing electrical equipment or would it really only be set up to hit a specific location which was producing EMR at a certain level? Clearly the Federation tech that Merlin etc are using is shielded well enough that if there is any leakage, it is not enough to capture the attention (as far as we know) if that AI. It is POSSIBLE that the AI does have the capacity to detect Merlin's various equipment BUT that even running around with his shuttle it falls well below the threshold where the AI has to actively notice it and track the activity.......heck, if I could notice the "something" like Merlin's vehicle was moving around and routinely (over the course of years) going back and disappearing "out of sight" in the same general areas over time, I would want to keep a watch to find out what it is. It is always POSSIBLE that the Archangles set the Ai's criteria such that it wouldn't decide that something one of them was using was automatically a target and swat it....as in kiss it with a KEW as using a fission or fusion warhead could be a bit too exciting and radioactive fallout etc wouldn't be good for the rest of the population. And how is the bombardment reloading? Is it reloading? It seems to me that even if the communication to and from the Temple facility and the bombardment platform was heavily shielded and essentially like a whisker laser only tightly focused on the platform, any type of extra-planetary automated operation to gather materials and manufacture replacement parts or weapons for the bombardment platform would constitute a major risk of attracting the Gbaba. So many questions. |

Well, we know with 100% certainty the Hubble constant is wrong. AKA Red Shift is blatantly wrong for both near and far objects. Tested it off of Jupiter for instance and it shows it is wrong, let alone far objects. We also know the Big Bang expansion hypothesis is blatantly wrong as the universe just keeps getting bigger and bigger the better telescopes we get and there is no supposed "age" difference in spectrum between near and far objects its just we couldn't see them better before. But whatever fill in people in the future will use to get distance between stars and propagation of EMS between stars will be used. Is propagation actually much faster than thought today? Much slower? We do not know, but since this is a story, I suppose we have to start with the inept cosmology based on Hubble/distance of "common knowledge", so... ugg. The Real question is, what distance is real between stars and what is the actual speed of EMS between giant gravity wells? We do not currently have a clue other than all the numbers for light years is clearly wrong as it is all based on ~Hubble's laws + constant in one form or another as it does not even work off objects which are close and we have far superior resolution on. People keep making up new cosmologies... but in truth what we need to do is throw out Hubble's constant and start over completely and only then will it be possible to finally get a unified theory of cosmology. _________

One small but important correction here. It's at the first part of On Armageddon reef. Owls missiles were detected When any group seeks political power in God's name, both religion and politics are instantly corrupted.
