During a morning podcast, it was revealed that one of the primary objectives of the new James Webb Space Telescope is to examine exoplanet atmospheres for chemicals that would only be present if there were a technological civilization on the planet. Among these detectable chemicals are fluorocarbons, which are an unequivocal indication of artificial production.

This discovery raises concerns about whether the Gbaba or the rakurai might also be capable of detecting these chemicals, adding to the list of potential threats to humanity's existence. As a result, the use of ammonia or other chemicals unsuitable for household refrigeration on Safehold may be the only option for the foreseeable future.
