Sea shanties are the traditional work tunes of the sailor, but as man goes into space it is logical that they be reworked for working spacers, arr-.

First one most of you will know, the Drunken Sailor:

Song text

Intro:

What'll we do with a drunken sailor,
What'll we do with a drunken sailor,
What'll we do with a drunken sailor,
Earl-aye in the morning?

Chorus:

Weigh heigh and up she rises
Weigh heigh and up she rises
Weigh heigh and up she rises
Earl-aye in the morning

Ending Chorus:

That's what we do with a drunken Sailor,
That's what we do with a drunken Sailor,
That's what we do with a drunken Sailor,
Earl-aye in the morning

Traditional verses:

1. Shave his belly with a rusty razor,(x3)
2. Put him in the long boat till he's sober,(x3)
3. Put him in the scuppers with a hawse pipe on him.(x3)
4. Put him in bed with the captain's daughter.(x3)

Song Pattern:song starts with the intro it then proceeds to the Chorus then it follows following pattern

Verse 1 (x3),Earl-aye in the morning?,chorus,
Verse 2 (x3),Earl-aye in the morning?,chorus,
Verse 3 (x3),Earl-aye in the morning?,chorus,
Verse 4 (x3),Earl-aye in the morning?, chorus
Ending Chorus

Thats what we do with a drunken sailor

Additional verses:

5. Beat him with a cat 'til his back is bleedin'
6. Put him in the bilge and make him drink it
7. Truss him up with a runnin' bowline.
8. Give 'im a dose of salt and water.
9. Stick on 'is back a mustard plaster.
10. Send him up the crow's nest till he falls down,
11. Tie him to the taffrail when she's yardarm under,
12. Soak 'im in oil 'til he sprouts a flipper.
13. Put him in the guard room 'til he's sober.
14. That's what we'll do with the drunken sailor.
15. Shave his balls with a rusty razor.
16. Make him the skipper of an Exxon tanker.
17. Give 'im the hair of the dog that bit him.

Variations:

1+. Keep him there and make 'im bale 'er.
2a. Pull out the plug and wet him all over,
3a. Shave his back with a rusty razor.
4a. Give 'im a taste of the bosun's rope-end.
6a. Heave 'im by the leg with a runnin' bowline.

Variation Of Chorus:

Hoo-ray and up she rises,
Hoo-ray and up she rises,
Hoo-ray and up she rises,
Earl-aye in the morning

OR----------------------------------------------
Way Way up she rises,
Way Way up she rises,
Way way up she rises,
Earl-aye in the morning

The above was lifted from Wikipedia now some changes to make a Space Shanty:

Intro:

What'll we do with a drunken spacer,
What'll we do with a drunken spacer,
What'll we do with a drunken spacer,
Earl-aye in the morning?

We'll keep him from the zero-G core,
We'll keep him from the zero-G core,
We'll keep him from the zero-G core,
Earl-aye in the morning?

Weigh heigh and down the core
Weigh heigh and down the core
Weigh heigh and down the core
Earl-aye in the morning

Chief Poker Mind, "Oh no Mange get away from the mike!"

<What'll we do with a drunken spacecat,>
<What'll we do with a drunken spacecat,>
<What'll we do with a drunken spacecat,>

<We'll tie his paws spread eagle,>
<We'll tie his paws spread eagle,>

<Earl-aye in the morning?>

<Weigh heigh and down the air-duct>
<Weigh heigh and down the air-duct>
<Weigh heigh and down the air-duct>
<Earl-aye in the morning>

Chief Poker Mind, "Perhaps drunken sailors are beneath the people on this forum, Mange. Lets start a rewrite of The Spanish Ladies:"

Lyrics

This is one of many versions; notable variations are shown in brackets after each line.

Farewell and adieu to you, Spanish Ladies,
Farewell and adieu to you, ladies of Spain;
For we've received orders for to sail for old England, (or '...under orders...')
But we hope in a short time to see you again. (or 'And we may never see you fair ladies again')

Chorus:
We will rant and we'll roar like true British sailors,
We'll rant and we'll roar all on the salt sea. (or 'We'll range and we'll roam...')
Until we strike soundings in the channel of old England;
From Ushant to Scilly is thirty-five leagues. (variously 34, 35 and 45 leagues)

We hove our ship to with the wind from sou'west, boys
We hove our ship to, deep soundings to take; (or '...for to make soundings clear')
'Twas forty-five fathoms,[5] with a white sandy bottom,
So we squared our main yard and up channel did make. (or '...did steer')

chorus

The first land we sighted was call-ed the Dodman,
Next Rame Head off Plymouth, Start, Portland and Wight;
We sailed by Beachy, by Fairlight and Dover, (or 'Dungeness')
And then we bore up for the South Foreland light. (or 'until we brought to by the...')

chorus

Then the signal was made for the grand fleet to anchor,
And all in the Downs that night for to lie;
Let go your shank painter, let go your cat stopper (that is, drop the anchor)
Haul up your clewgarnets, let tacks and sheets fly! (that is, roll up the sails)

chorus

Now let ev'ry man drink off his full bumper,
And let ev'ry man drink off his full glass; (or 'bowl')
We'll drink and be jolly and drown melancholy,
And here's to the health of each true-hearted lass. (or 'soul')

chorus

Original song from Wikipedia.

What the original sounds like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZfYtCLA23s

And fixed up for the Honorverse Space Shanty:

The Beowulfian Ladies:

Farewell and adieu to you, Beowulfian Ladies,
Farewell and adieu to you, ladies of Beowulf;
For we've received orders for to sail for old Manticore,
But we hope in a short time to see you once more.

Chorus:
{ We will rant and we'll roar like true Manti sailors,
We'll rant and we'll roar all across space once more.
Until we strike in the orbit of old Manticore;
From Beowulf to Sphinx is a hundred and thirty-five light years and more. }

We hove our ship to with the worm hole from sou'west, boys
We hove our ship to, deep sorrow at the sight;
'Twas forty-five days since the treacherous attack,
So we squared our shoulders revenge for to take.

chorus

The first land we sighted was the ruin of Hephestius,
Next the Ruin Sphinx, Yalta Crossing, Black Water Clan and Treecat innocence;

Now guy you try with the rest:

We sailed by Beachy, by Fairlight and Dover, (or 'Dungeness')
And then we bore up for the South Foreland light. (or 'until we brought to by the...')

chorus

Then the signal was made for the grand fleet to anchor,
And all in the Downs that night for to lie;

(or 'soul')

chorus

Pokermind,

SF-themed folk songs, both parodies and originals,
have a llooonngg tradition within fandom.
They go back almost as far as the first fanzines,
which printed them.
They also have a name, "filksongs," which derives
from a typographical error (typo) in those fanzines.
Almost every SF universe has them, including Honorverse.

Just because no one has joined in today - yet -
does not mean that no one here cares.
Why don't you come back when the Xmas Carols are over.

Meanwhile, here is a famous one by Stevenson:
It is a riddle. Up for it?

1 I was born of wood and sails
When only birds could fly the sky,
A warrior I, I shed men's blood
that Man and Light might never die!
When my flag at last was furled
I left the waves forever curled
And knew, I'd won, the world.

2 For war was I then built of steel
When stars were yet but points of light
And on the world of seas I sailed
to verify the tide of Right,
And still the lives of men were lost
and still was asked that deadly cost
And on the waves Man's free-dom tossed.

3 From hope and courage came I then
And took my name from dream of stars.
"Though made to fly I only lived
so sister ships need not no pause.
The launching of a dream I spurred
And hearts of men with joy I stirred
But still the cry of death, was heard.

4 I sail the stars on Freedom's quest
And seek the joy of many lands.
Though made to stand the bite of War
The palm of Peace I raise in hand!
A thousand colors, many shapes
That speak at last the dream of Space
And one my death illuminates.

5 We Sister Ships of diff'ring times
Have ever harbored iron men!
Our decks and cargo bays and bridges
share the glories now and then!
Of wars and seeking dreams and lives
Has been our message, never lies,
And so our name for eh-ever flies:
?????

If you can't find the name,
slap your forehead until it comes out.

OFF TOPIC

Unfortunately yes. I am going blind can't drive in a state with minimal public transportation and joined my first and so far only forum, this one in October. I started using computers in the days of punched cards, and analog programing on the back of card readers, IE the Stone Age. I was so scared of viruses that I stayed off the net until just two years ago. I have unsuccessfully tried to join Baen's bar as I have several 1632-verse submissions written, but still no luck. Wander over to the Assiti Shards and check out Railroading, and Machine Tools.

I was an amateur machinist, gunsmith, and blacksmith how many of you have made a flintlock revolver from scratch? I have. How many of you have machined wrought iron and know that you need a rounded tool bit or you'll snag the slag and tear the part you are turning. I do. How many of you know which is easier to machine, a Gardner or a Gatling gun? I do. Since my strokes I have a poor short term memory and get some facts confused, sorry. If my posts are smotherning the site PM me and tell me to knock it off, and I will, well for a while!

See the revolver I made in the central photo of the card above. I put some eighty hours in the match/wheel-lock hand mortar above the revolver.

Fire arms too complex? Plans for a Roman Scorpion catapult, Julius Caesar's favorite artillery. Sorry the 30% reduction makes it hard to read the plans, but I hope it saves the Duckk from a heart attack.

Sorry to hear about your sight--hope it doesn't continue to deteriorate.

Nah, it's just that they seemed to be bunched and since you have the time and motivation, you get more in than many of us. But you know the topic, you enjoy the give and take, so for my .02 cents, keep on posting.

Now, as for the topic, I'm not good on Shanties, but there are a couple 'seafaring' songs I've tried to adapt to the Honorverse. Many here probably have not heard them before, so I'm attaching You Tube performances that you can listen to first.

ONE: Ghosts of Cape Horn by Gordon Lightfoot. This is about, as you might guess, the sailors and ships lost in the rounding of Cape Horn through the centuries.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VYC4eie2kU

So I adapted it to the Sachsen Wave, which also claimed it's share of ships:

All around the Sachsen Wave
Ships of the wall, ships of the brave
Those who knew they’d never be saved
They are the ghosts of the Sachsen Wave
Fal deral da riddle de rum
With a rim dim diddy
And a rum dum dum
Hypering out beyond the grave
They are the ghosts of the Sachsen Wave

See them all in sad repair
Demons dance everywhere
Gravity gales, tattered sails
And none to tell the tales

Come all of you rustic old space dogs
Who follow the great Southern Cross
You were riding the wave
The G’s ne’er forgave
When ya lost 'er one day
And you read all yer letters
From far systems away
Then you took them to the vacuum t’ween the stars

All around the Sachsen Wave
Ships of the wall, ships of the brave
Those who knew they’d never be saved
They are the ghosts of the Sachsen Wave
Fal deral da riddle de rum
With a rim dim diddy
And a rum dum dum
Hypering out beyond the grave
They are the ghosts of the Sachsen Wave

So come all you old space dogs from Gryphon
San Martin, Sphinx and the ‘Core
You were caught by the chance
Of a spacer’s last dance
It was not meant to be
And ya read all yer letters
Cried spacedock farewell
Then you took them to the vacuum t’ween the stars

All around the Sachsen Wave
Ships of the wall, ships of the brave
Those who knew they’d never be saved
They are the ghosts of the Sachsen Wave
Fal deral da riddle de rum
With a rim dim diddy
And a rum dum dum
Hypering out beyond the grave
They are the ghosts of the Sachsen Wave

OK, the Second one is called Northwest Passage by another Canadian named Stan Rogers, and about the efforts by men in the 1800's to find a sea route via Northwest passage above Canada--and the men, like Franklin, who died in the attempt.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVY8LoM47xI

I adapted it to the time in history where the Hyperdrive was developed and perfected.

CHORUS: Ah, for just one time I would take the Hyper Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the distant stars;
Tracing one warm line through a void so wild and savage
And make a Hyper Passage to the stars.

Starward from the System edge 'tis there 'twas said to lie
The space route to the Galaxy for which so many died;
Seeking gold and glory, left their atoms in the rift
And a long-forgotten story as their gift. CHORUS

Six centuries thereafter, I take passage thru the Black
Following brave Kelso, where he went and ne’er came back
Watching systems rise before me, then behind me sink again
This tardiest explorer, driving hard through the star lanes. CHORUS

And through the night, looking out the dome, my children at my breast
I think upon Joe Buckley, Warshawski and the rest
Who cracked the lightspeed ramparts and did show a path to ours
To race the roaring Grav-waves to the stars. CHORUS

How then am I so different from the first ones through this way?
Like them, I left a settled life, I threw it all away.
To seek a Hyper Passage beyond the farthest land
To find there but the road back home again. CHORUS

Number three was unplanned, but when I found the "Northwest Passage" by Stan rogers, I also noted he had done a song called "Barrett's Privateers", about Canadians during the War of 1812--and it was such a great song, I had to adapt it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMV34CwN ... re=related

In this case I made them Silesians, it seemed like a likely place where privateers would be found.

Oh, the year was 1858,
( "How I wish I was in Posnan now!")
A letter of marque came from the Green
To the scummiest vessel I’d ever seen.

(CHORUS)
Goddamn them all!
I was told we’d cruise the stars for Mantie gold.
We’d fire no guns, shed no tears.
I’m a broken man on a Halifax pier,
The last of Barrett’s Privateers.

Well, Elcid Barrett cried the town
( "How I wish I was in Posnan now!")
For forty brave crew all spacers who
Would make for him the "Antelope’s" crew

(REPEAT CHORUS)

The "Antelope’s" sloop was a sickening sight
( "How I wish I was in Posnan now!")
Her impellers were old and her sail in rags
And the cook in the scuppers with the staggers and jags

(REPEAT CHORUS)

On Founder’s birthday we put to space
("How I wish I was in Posnan now!")
It was fifty one days to the Chalice way
Working like madmen night and day

(REPEAT CHORUS)

On the seventy-sixth day we sailed again
( "How I wish I was in Posnan now!")
When a bloody great Mantie hove in sight
With our cracked four lasers we made to fight.

(REPEAT CHORUS)

The Mantie lay low down with gold
("How I wish I was in Posnan now!")
She was broad and fat and slow to phase
But to catch her took the Antelope two whole days.

(REPEAT CHORUS)

Then at length we stood 40K away
( "How I wish I was in Posnan now!")
Our cracked four lasers made an awful din
But with one tractored LAC the Manti stove us in

(REPEAT CHORUS)

The Antelope shook and pitched on her side
( "How I wish I was in Posnan now!")
Well Barrett was smashed like a bowl of eggs
And the grazer carried off both me legs.

(REPEAT CHORUS)

So here I sit in my twenty-third year
( "How I wish I was in Posnan now!")
It’s been six years since I hypered away
And I just made Halifax yesterday

(REPEAT CHORUS)

Hope you enjoyed the Music.
