If you haven't read it, do, it is quite humorous.

His colab with David Freer bats... rats... ugly? Something like that.

Many different books, and genres.
He was particularly good as a collaborator in series like the one about a magical Venice with Mercedes Lackey and others. His Belisarius series with David Drake was excellent alternative military science fiction.
His own 1632 Series was notable for his generosity in sharing later books with new authors. Obviously his shared books with RFC were excellent as well.
I agree that the Bats and Rats ones were a good light hearted read.
Apart from the actual published books he also was a prolific writer of social articles. He spent a lot of energy in combatting the more draconian DRMS rules, allowing free copying of much of his stuff, along with convincing other authors to do similar, after their initial sales.
I never met him, but did exchange an occasional comment on his web blog. Others on here may have known him personally, being the opposite side of the world tends to inhibit such. I'm probably way wrong, but my impression was that his Eric the Red persona was more of a wind up of some of the more conservative members of the genre, than a true depiction in his later years. He had been a member of the Socialist Workers Party, but that's hardly communist (unless you come from Alabama or such).
I will miss his work, and wish his family all the best.

I wanted to like his 1632 series, but honestly could not get into it as the end result was KNOWN from the beginning. Same reason I could not get into Turtledove even though the concept seemed interesting from the start.

I also quite liked his 2 alternate history of Jacksonian America: '1812: The Rivers of War' and '1824: The Arkansas War'.

Baen had recently acquired the rights from Tor, republished them, and was finally going to let Eric do more books in that universe :(

Oh, and his science fiction, Earth has been conquered, series 'The Course of Empire', 'The Crucible of Empire', and 'The Span of Empire'

Mother of Demons!

Tripped over it in a Borders in San Francisco, have grabbed just about everything with his name on it ever since.

What was his best novel, and or series?

Best series was 1632. Creating a whole collaborative universe was a superb achievement.

Hard to pick a single novel. Most of them are part of one series or another, and therefore depend on what came before or after. I'm going to go with the short novel From The Highlands, mainly because I'm a big fan of the Zilwicki/Cachat dynamic.

Thanks, the title itself is very interesting. But that is a colab, is there anything that is solely his own work?

It seems his death was unexpected, as in he wasn't ill or anything?

Early Turtledove was much better. The Last Article is a masterpiece.

I’m saddened by this. I really enjoyed his books.

I really like the premise of 1632. But it threw me off once upon a time because there didn't seem to be an agreement on what the series should be named. There were at least three different names for the same series which confused me.

Does anyone know the name of Eric's very first published novel?

The autobiography of David's on the site lists Insurrection as his first published novel, but he wrote poetry first.

Anyone have any of David's poetry, btw?

Anyway, anyone read David's very first novel? Which is a colab itself.

Sure, I've read Insurrection. It's one of 4 books that Weber and White wrote in the universe of the Starfire tabletop game.
Chronologically Insurrection come last, though it was written first.

(The four, chronologically, where Crusade, In Death's Ground, The Shiva Option, and Insurrection; and were later bundled together and republished as The Stars at War and The Stars at War II)

His co-author Steve White went on to write some later novels in that same universe, but I don't find them as interesting as the earlier collaboration efforts.

They books have far more point of view characters than the Honorverse does; and are spread further apart in the universe's chronology. IIRC Crusade happens 30 or 40 years before the middle two, and Insurrection at least that far after them. So as best I recall you don't have anybody who appears in all 4 books.
