Song text

Intro:

What'll we do with a drunken sailor,
What'll we do with a drunken sailor,
What'll we do with a drunken sailor,
Earl-aye in the morning?

Chorus:

Weigh heigh and up she rises
Weigh heigh and up she rises
Weigh heigh and up she rises
Earl-aye in the morning

Ending Chorus:

That's what we do with a drunken Sailor,
That's what we do with a drunken Sailor,
That's what we do with a drunken Sailor,
Earl-aye in the morning

Traditional verses:

1. Shave his belly with a rusty razor,(x3)
[Rusty straight rasors were dull and pulled the hair and leave a reddened and sore shaved area.]
2. Put him in the long boat till he's sober,(x3)
[Longboats were traditionally towed behind the ship to save deck space, thus keeping your mate out of the officer's sight.]
3. Put him in the scuppers with a hawse pipe on him.(x3)
[A scupper is a hole in the side of the ship on the weather deck, the deck with no decks above. A hause pipe is a canvas hose from the manually operated ship's pump that removes the water from the bilge, the space below the lowest deck and the hull.]
4. Put him in bed with the captain's daughter.(x3)
[Corporal punishment was used in ancient times beating the back with a short whip called a cat of nine tails. The saying 'not enough room to swing a cat,' comes from the fact the cramped quarters of old Terran sailing ships one could not whip a sailor. The term 'in bed with the captain's daughter' is a term meaning being lashed with the cat of nine tails (the captain's daughter).]

Song Pattern:song starts with the intro it then proceeds to the Chorus then it follows following pattern

Verse 1 (x3),Earl-aye in the morning?,chorus,
Verse 2 (x3),Earl-aye in the morning?,chorus,
Verse 3 (x3),Earl-aye in the morning?,chorus,
Verse 4 (x3),Earl-aye in the morning?, chorus
Ending Chorus

Thats what we do with a drunken sailor

Additional verses:

5. Beat him with a cat 'til his back is bleedin'
[Another whipping 'a cat' is short for a cat of nine tails.]
6. Put him in the bilge and make him drink it
[Ugh the water in the bilge is the foulest immagineable, no one would willingly drink it.]
7. Truss him up with a runnin' bowline.
[Tie up your mate to keep him out of the officer's sight.]
8. Give 'im a dose of salt and water.
[Old time medicine to make one throw up and clean out the digestive tract, an old time hangover cure.]
9. Stick on 'is back a mustard plaster.
[A painful plaster on the back another old time hangover cure. Even more painful on a whipped back.]
10. Send him up the crow's nest till he falls down,
[Your mates must really not like you to do this, send you up the mast to fall to your death.]
11. Tie him to the taffrail when she's yardarm under,
[Again your mates don't like you a sheet (a rope to the sail's bottom) is sure to get you.]
12. Soak 'im in oil 'til he sprouts a flipper.
[ugh, clear enough]
13. Put him in the guard room 'til he's sober.
[guard room is an old term for brig, jail cell you lubbers.]
14. That's what we'll do with the drunken sailor.
15. Shave his balls with a rusty razor.
[See above, your mates must really dislike you.]
16. Make him the skipper of an Exxon tanker.
[Reference to a disastrous oil spill caused by a drunken Exxon tanker captain on old Terra.]
17. Give 'im the hair of the dog that bit him.
['hair of the dog that bit him,' some more alcohol another hang over cure?]

Variations:

1+. Keep him there and make 'im bale 'er.
[After putting in the longboat, usually leaky with a load he has to bale to keep afloat.]
2a. Pull out the plug and wet him all over,
[Remove the plug from a scupper and douse him with sea water if you like him or man the pump and douse him with bilge water if you don't.]
3a. Shave his back with a rusty razor.
[see above belly shaving.]
4a. Give 'im a taste of the bosun's rope-end.
[bosun or boat swains carried a short rope with a loop on the end to beat misbehaving sailors on old Terra.]
6a. Heave 'im by the leg with a runnin' bowline.
[Tie his leg and haul him upside down up into the rigging, look out below if he up chucks.]

Variation Of Chorus:

Hoo-ray and up she rises,
Hoo-ray and up she rises,
Hoo-ray and up she rises,
Earl-aye in the morning

OR----------------------------------------------
Way Way up she rises,
Way Way up she rises,
Way way up she rises,
Earl-aye in the morning

The above was lifted from Wikipedia.

The Chief, "Another line I have heard is 'Make him kiss the gunner's daughter.' This Snotties refers to a punishment reserved mostly for Snotties on Old Terra where the midshipman was made to lean over an ancient muzzle loading cannon, the gunner's daughter, prior to a beating on the Snotties rear end. Arr- too bad we can't do that in the RMN,"

Hi, Pokermind,

I'm sorry to hear about your disability. My wife is disabled (brain hemorrhage about 25 years ago left her hemiplegic), so I sympathize with you (no pity, mind you, but genuine sympathy).

I'm employed as a professional scientist, and I volunteer as music director and AV director for my church. In my professional capacity, I'm way too busy to respond to all your posts, but please don't quit on my account; I enjoy them! In my capacity as music director, I greatly appreciate your hand and mind (and Hutch's too, I might add) working to develop new lyrics for the Old Terra shanties. I also appreciate the explanation you gave for "What will do with a drunken sailor?" I had long wondered about some of the verses (some are fairly obvious, such as the rusty razor), and I appreciated the explanation.

Keep on posting. I won't respond to everything -- maybe not even the majority of things -- that you post, but that doesn't mean I won't read them and enjoy them.

Does the Looking Glass Universe have space chanties? Nope, not that I know of. But we got 'em here folks, and Gordon Lightfoot cross-references too.

(Don't know what we'll do with 'em ... timing of salute guns. How does that one go:

Hangings too good for him! Kick the [blighter?] out!
starboard guns, fire
port guns, fire!

Hangings too good for him! kick him out!
starboard guns, fire!
port guns, fire!

[end]
I have no clue at the moment where I read that one.

If you don't know the tune here is what the original song sounds like:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZfYtCLA23s

The Beowulfian Ladies:
By CPO Poker Mind and SCF Mangy Fur

Farewell and adieu to you, Beowulfian Ladies,
Farewell and adieu to you, ladies of Beowulf;
For we've received orders for to sail for old Manticore,
But we hope in a short time to see you once more.

We will rant and we'll roar like true Manti sailors,
We'll rant and we'll roar all across space once more.
Until we strike in the orbit of old Manticore;
From Beowulf to Sphinx is a hundred and thirty-five light years and more.

We hove our ship to with the worm hole from sou'west, boys
We hove our ship to, deep sorrow at the sight;
'Twas forty-five days since the treacherous attack,
So we squared our shoulders revenge for to take.

We will rant and we'll roar like true Manti sailors,
We'll rant and we'll roar all across space once more.
Until we strike in the orbit of old Manticore;
From Beowulf to Sphinx is a hundred and thirty-five light years and more.

The first land we sighted was the ruin of Hephaestus,
Next the Ruin Sphinx, Yalta Crossing, Black Water Clan and Treecat innocence;
We sailed by smoking Hephaestus, by the ruined yards, and O'l Landing
And we assumed stationary orbit over Old Landing

We will rant and we'll roar like true Manti sailors,
We'll rant and we'll roar all across space once more.
Until we strike in the orbit of old Manticore;
From Beowulf to Sphinx is a hundred and thirty-five light years and more.

Then the signal was made for the grand fleet to fight,
And all hoped the enemy would surrender in the light,
But the missiles let go and ours in answer in a show stopper,
All spacers must cry at the carnage, the wrecked fleet a sight,

We will rant and we'll roar like true Manti sailors,
We'll rant and we'll roar all across space once more.
Until we strike in the orbit of old Manticore;
From Beowulf to Sphinx is a hundred and thirty-five light years and more.

Now let ev'ry man drink off his full bumper,
And let ev'ry man drink off his full glass;
We'll drink and be jolly and drown melancholy,
And here's to the health of each true-hearted lass. (or 'soul')

We will rant and we'll roar like true Manti sailors,
We'll rant and we'll roar all across space once more.
Until we strike in the orbit of old Manticore;
From Beowulf to Sphinx is a hundred and thirty-five light years and more.

I was looking for a thread on RMC shanties (why would they want to use shanties in the first place) and all I find is messed up sea chanties, granted there is always variations on the theme of the chanties, but I've never heard these ones.
Mange for two platters of shrimp and some celery do you think you could say re-arrange his furniture or toss him out the airlock if he keeps it up.
Please let me know what you think about the offer.

Mange: If Pokermind gets those two chantie that won't be to bad, I think, but if he gets hold of A Bottle of Rum I think I would cringe. As for being on the beach I know that, thought you might have lived on a space station!
As for Italian and Portuguese don't eat to much of that and I as to Bean-town no way I was stationed there and there's only one place worse and that's northern NJ, I'm talking mostly drivers here. (Stationed at Sandy Hook,NJ).
Now to the Chinese cuisine, I had that Last night including egg rolls, so you think we can make a deal.

By the way I live in NH in the start of the lakes region by the Maine border. We get lobstah here.
