Hobby horses are inanimate. You can't ride an inanimate horse. He's dead. You beat a dead horse. You pull him out so you can beat him some more.

It's a standard idiom in English. See: https://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/ride+hobby-horse

(1) This also assumes that the relevant portions of the incest laws have been repealed by the grace of the Tester. Or maybe that would be the action of the Accuser.

In what way would this be considered incest, as long as they are not the husband's sisters (which would eliminate the mother in law completely)?

Some legal systems consider the sibling of a (former or deceased) spouse to be within the bounds of incest for a subsequent marriage.

As any married father with teenaged daughters can attest, women who live in the same house often synchronize their menstrual cycles.

Imagine having 28 wives all experiencing PMS simultaenously?

I could write an interesting short story about Protector Benjamin, Judah Yanakov and all of Graysons male heros meeting all night in a bar because all of them need to get out of Dodge.

As far as I can find this is illegal under Jewish and Islamic law, but would not be a problem in secular law (as long as polygamy is allowed, but that does not give an answer for Grayson). Islamic law says you only may marry a second sister after the first sister is divorced. Jewish law says only after the first sister is dead.

Isn't there provision in Islam to marry your brother's wife if he dies? A sort of welfare provision?

There is a requirement in the Torah that, if a man dies childless, his brother is to provide his widow with a child. Onan's refusal to meet this requirement is what got him in trouble with the Big Guy Upstairs. (Gen 38:8-10). You could say he failed his Test.

Judah then "forgot" to marry his third son to Tamar, his oldest son's widow, when he grew up. Which caused even more trouble for Judah (Gen 38:11-26). The rule is formalized in Dt 25:5, to ensure that the brother's line continues.

No, it means he has at least twenty-eight mothers-in-law. A polygamist married to the child of a polygamist is sort of in an exponential situation in that respect. Trust me, Grayson knows!

Each wife comes from a family with multiple sister wives.
Aman who married 28 wives, each of whom comes from a family of 28 sister wives would have 784 mothers in laws.

A wise man would choose to marry two or more sisters from the same family just to make the geneology comprehensible.

Of course having 28 wives living in the same household will have interesting physiological consequences. Women who live in the same home often synchronize menstrual cycles. Imagine having 28 wives who are all menstruating or experiencing PMS.

A good idea for a short story is set in a bar where Protector Benjamin, several of the Steadholders, Admirals Yanakov and Mathews, and all of Grayson's greatest heros have gathered with the intention of staying for breakfast. All of these mighty men are cowering in the bar because their wives are all having their periods and the thought of going home terifies them.

Hi guys,

Thanks for making me smile at the monthly 'boys night out'.

Not to get political, but I remember Rush Limbaugh suggested decades ago that whole battalions be formed entirely of women, so that when they had synchronized their periods they would be the most fearsome warriors ever seen in battle; specifically mentioning the 'First All-American Amazon Cavalry Battalion', that would rotate out of combat when their anger levels had subsided, replaced by other similar battalions to maintain the rage level, a prospect that few men would willingly face. ;)

Grayson's aforementioned 3 traditional wives means up to 9 possible mother-in-laws, besides all the unmarried women filling niche roles and positions in the households, so dozens of women all suffering from PMS could easily make life miserable for even the most sympathetic or christian of husbands.

Grayson isn't the only polygamous society in the Manticore alliance [Alizon, etc], I suspect there would be some planetary or sub-planetary societies in the RoH as well, besides dozens if not hundreds throughout the SL and protectorates, NTM the hundreds or thousands of new colonies, given how many cultures develop some form of polygamy or polyandry on their own to meet their own unique situations.

I also wonder if the MAlignment might have done away with women's' monthly periods, or tried, at least on Darius and other closed systems as an inconvenience that prevented both women and men from reaching their full potential productivity, as other authors' universes have done, after all after 2000 plus years, one might expect some popular improvements in the species created by women for women.

Interesting times, intriguing thought progressions, and occasionally amusing results.

Thanks, and best wishes to all,

Lyonheart

We commissioned a report on the suitability of women as attack helicopter pilots. The detailed and serious report concluded that while individuals differed overall each sex had advantages that balanced out.
The concluding section addressed hormonal swings, with the point made that if you were facing an enemy chopper, would you prefer if the pilot had PMT or not?
