Uh, that's the 2.9 trillion dollars that are NOT in it. All that money was squandered long ago, spent on things that had nothing to do with Social Security. Nothing remains but a giant debt that we, the taxpayers, are expected to make good.

Let's just summarize the GOP position on social security, in chronological historical order.

1. OMG SOCIALISM! DON'T DO IT!

2. Oh you did it, hey look at all this money! Hmmmm... let's use it to finance tax cuts for our rich campaign donors and slash top marginal tax rates and other taxes on the rich and corporations to the bone, gutting the government's revenue stream! Yay! We're heroes! Tax cuts!

3. OMG, THE SOCIAL SECURITY MONEY IS GETTING USED UP! THIS IS A SOCIALIST SCAM WE TOLD YOU SO!

4. WHAT???? UNDO OUR TAX CUTS to fix the system we deliberately sabotaged and stole from???? There go Democrats trying to steal money out of our wallets!!!

There have never been any assets behind those bonds, only a promise to wring the money out of the American taxpayers. The politicians don't care how many they print. They don't have to pay for them.

Yes there has.

Belief.

Belief that the Federal government will honour the debt.
Exactly the same as the belief that underpins the US Dollar.

Shake that belief and the ecconomy stumbles.
Shatter it and Cthia is digging out the backpacks.

Federal deficit up 77 percent so far this budget year

The government collected lower taxes from individuals and corporations, reflecting the impact of Trump's $1.5 trillion tax cut.

I await your outrage Imaginos... you know, considering how upset you were at Obama when he *reduced* the deficit by hundreds of billions of dollars.

The problem is SPENDING. No matter how much they take in taxes, they always spend more. They spent eight years raising taxes, and it was never enough for them. They raise taxes by $400 billion, and then drool all over themselves and spend $700 billion.

If they want to spend another $300 billion, and are forced to 'compromise' and only spend $200 billion more, they claim they've cut spending by $100 billion!

Oh, and government bonds are DEBT, not assets.

If they taxed everybody 100%, they would spend 150% and whine that taxes were not high enough!
———————————
If you give the politicians money to pay the government's debts, they will spend it all and borrow more.

Nice refusal to engage with the argument honestly there, Imaginos.

Uh, no, I CORRECTED the argument.

The politicians can't tax their way out of their spending problem. Trump is no better, or worse, than the rest.

The government is growing much faster than the rest of the country, taking a bigger and bigger slice of everybody's pie. Eventually, we won't have a country left, only The Government That Ate America.

Imaginos, do we need to quote Sir Humphrey again?

Seriously, Yes Minister should be mandatory viewing for any politics class.

While Yes Minister was considered the training program for learning how to deal with the Civil Service during the Thatcherite era and about a decade or so after, that title has now been usurped by the TV series The Thick Of It which was made with the help of several former high-ranking Civil Servants, thus ensuring that it is scarily accurate (even down to the swearing).

Interesting note, The Thick Of It inspired the American TV series Veep.
