Climate change will not bring about our end, but this will--

The world’s climate has been changing since the beginning of time; this is NOT our impeding threat !!

Fossil fuels are “finite” and known oil reserves will be sucked up and burned within the text 15-20 years!!

This is “the” crises facing us, not climate but our energy needs.

Will we make the transition in a smooth way or one tragedy piled up on each other? :?:

The oil won’t run out in 15 or 20 years, or even 25 or 30. It will run out in 100 years or so.

There are other sources of energy, and other resources, and we should be using that oil to reach them, not to reach still more oil.

As the oil runs out, more energy is required to extract and transport it to where we want it — and most of that energy is produced by burning oil. Eventually it will take a barrel of oil to produce a barrel of oil. Long before we reach that point, it will no longer be possible to run our civilization on oil. It will not even be possible to run an oil company. Nobody seems to be preparing for that end.

I've been hearing the 15-20 years of running out of fossil fuels since I was in elementary school 35 years ago....

This reminds me of a scene from an old TV show MY WORLD AND WELCOME TO IT. It starred William Windom who was in the classic STAR TREK episode THE DOOMSDAY MACHINE.

Windom is traveling through a dessert and meets a smartass old geezeer who looks up in the bluebsky and asks Windom if he thinks it will rain. Windom's character answers, "eventually, it will."

The same is true about Oil, Natural Gas and Coal. I expect that humans will make one more, najor breakthrough comparable to hydraulic fracturing that will stretch out supplies of fossil fuels by another half century or so beyond the half century supply we currently have. At that point humans will have to get serious about nuclear fission power, Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion, Solar Power Satellytes, and may be nuclear fusion. There will be considerable contribution from small scale, on site solar and some wind power, but we better not try to rely on those.

All good points. We have enormous stocks of coal that can be converted to liquid fuel as well, but by the time we are doing that alterative power sources will be cheaper.
In our state we are looking at using solar electricity to produce hydrogen, which can be transported as ammonia.
I'd like to see photosynthesis adapted for solar panels that produce chemical feedstocks directly.
With climate change happening now, it could be worthwhile putting solar electricity panels on high stands to shade crops from intense heat.

Rapid and severe climate change has led to 3 or 4 mass extinction events.

We appear to be in a time of rapid and severe climate change.

Of course, rapid and severe are relative terms :)

Don't know when the oil runs out, but my guess is it won't. The reason being that the cost of oil-based fuels will become to high long before that.

By 2025 most new cars in Europe and China will be electrical (might be as early as 2020), and by 2030 my guess is that you won't see many fossil fueled cars anywhere in the developed world, as they will have become to expensive to use compared to EVs. Only places you will see them is where the electricity grid is not developed enough to supply the power for EVs.

In another forum I found this which looks interesting. I cut a lot out to fit, check the link for the full story

This Gasoline Is Made of Carbon Sucked From the Air
A Harvard-affiliated Canadian company is making a liquid fuel that is carbon neutral, and they hope the economics will be in their favor.

Imagine driving up to your local gas station and being able to choose between regular, premium, or carbon-free gasoline.
Carbon Engineering, a Canadian company, is already making a liquid fuel by sucking carbon dioxide (CO2) out of the atmosphere and combining it with hydrogen from water. This is an engineering breakthrough on two fronts: A potentially cost-effective way to take CO2 out of the atmosphere to fight climate change and a potentially cost-competitive way to make gasoline, diesel, or jet fuel that doesn’t add any additional CO2 to the atmosphere.

“Our paper shows the costs and engineering for a full-scale plant that could capture one million tons of CO2 a year,” Keith said.

“It costs more than a barrel of oil right now, but in places with a price on carbon of $20 a ton we’re competitive,” Oldham said in an interview.

Still, even at $100 per ton, there aren’t enough CO2 buyers right now. So the company decided to make a carbon-neutral liquid fuel, said Steve Oldham, CEO of Carbon Engineering. The captured CO2 is combined with hydrogen, which is made through the electrolysis of water. While the process requires a lot of electricity, the pilot plant in Squamish uses renewable hydro power. The resulting synthetic fuel can be blended or used on its own as gasoline, diesel, or jet fuel. When it’s burned it emits the same amount of CO2 that went into making it, so it’s effectively carbon neutral.

Carbon Engineering is building a larger plant, utilizing low-cost renewable energy, that will produce 200 barrels of synthetic fuel a day. It should be operational in 2020, said Keith. The company is also looking to license their technology.
“We think this is very scalable and will have world-wide markets,” says Oldham. “All you need is air and water as feedstocks, and some electricity.” And a license to their tech.

I must add: Plants live on CO2 and exhale 02; We live on O2 and exhale CO2

Aaaah, make that a shitload of electricity. Gasoline contains about 37 KWH of chemical energy per gallon. Nothing is ever 100% efficient, so it will take a lot more than 37 KWH of electricity to make one gallon of ‘carbon-free’ gasoline.

And then, when you burn it in an internal combustion piston engine, you will get less than 6 KWH of usable energy out of it.

You’d be an order of magnitude better off using that electricity to charge electric cars.
