Looking at the news, it would seem that Trump is about to have a previously-unexpected rival for the position of POTUS.
The challenger is a very popular person who has risen into the ranks of the billionaires from a childhood in poverty. This person has been awarded a medal by President Obama and has (honorary) doctorate degrees from both Duke and Harvard. What else can I say about this person? A well-known philanthropist, swayer of at least one election and most certainly born in the USA (Mississippi, no less). Who is it? (Insert drumroll here...) Oprah Winfrey! Yep, she recently gave a speech that was incredibly similar to the standard "Running for office" type speech and with her level of popularity/brand recognition? She'd probably make it.. "Ladies and Gentlemen, the 46th President of the United States, Oprah Winfrey!" That would probably mean that America would have a FGOTUS (First Gentleman Of The United States) instead of a FLOTUS. So, do you think Oprah is serious about running for President (and toppling Trump off his throne)? Could America finally have a female head of state (we in the UK have had several, both Royal and Parliamentary)? Does this mean that the film Monsters Vs Aliens is set after 2024 or 2028 (One presidential aide wonders what Oprah Winfrey would do in a certain situation)? This could be fun! ~~~~~~

If the Dems nominate Oprah I'm going to put my head right *through* my desk.
Could there be a worse move for the country than responding to an unqualified celebrity president with "Well now we want our own unqualified celebrity president!"? Thus cementing the idea in the US political landscape that both major parties think the presidency is such a joke of a job that there are literally no requirements for being qualified for the office beyond being famous and agreeing with their positions? I mean, she'd be a better president than Trump, but FFS that should NOT be the damn bar people need to clear. They buried that bar 50 ft deep and built a nice walkway over it. You could roll a corpse over that bar Weekend at Bernie's style without breaking a sweat. (Fortunately, I expect this to blow over) |

To give Oprah her due, she's smart enough to appoint either a vice President, or Chief of Staff, to actually do the work AND stay out of their way.
It's that last bit the current President is having trouble with. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

For goodness sake, don't do it man! All research has led to negative results on the efficacy of that tactic, which I can vouch for after plunging my head into a brick wall after Donald Trump was elected. As I stated in the "Impeachment Imminent" thread, perhaps the greatest damage that Trump has committed against the country -- right off the bat -- is lowering the bar so low even a Chihuahua can clear it. Just like Donald Trump, Oprah Winfrey does not have the qualifications to become POTUS. But with Trump, the Reps. vs. Dems. warfare has taken on a whole new meaning and constitutes a turn for the worse where the party is more important than the President. It isn't about the health of the country anymore. Electing Donald Trump was a mistake on so many levels. Parties should not be subject to a win at all costs strategy. Donald Trump has ushered in an age where it isn't about the Presidency, it's about the party. This isn't what our founding fathers had in mind. The political system has become a mockery. I'm afraid Oprah Winfrey is simply fighting fire with fire.
Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense |

Fun fact: During Donald Trump's 2000 presidential attempt, he wanted Oprah Winfrey as his running mate.

I am reminded of my high school's Student Council elections, in which popularity counted for more than ability.

Half the US electorate has already demonstrated their utter contempt for the idea that the presidency is a job to be taken seriously.... if the Dems jump on that bandwagon it's all over. Might as well just start up a live game show every four years called "So You Think You Can President?" and hand the winner the launch codes. |

Seriously doubt that. Her ego wouldn't stand for it. And yes she does have a big ego (job requirement for getting as far as she's gotten in the field she's in), she just hides it under charm. |

Comments re this are popping up on the science/pharmaceutical forums. Pretty strong opposition from people who are otherwise quite liberal politically. Mainly based on all the pseudo-science alternative medicine she's promoted over the years. The most frequent complaint is all the anti-vaxxers she's had on. Second to that is Dr Oz and fellow travelers.

Personally I doubt she's going to run.
But whoever she supports will get the nomination. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
