Still, for all our speculating, it's unlikely that Albrecht bothered to hide the origin. (Though it he did, simulating an orbital origin near Mike's ships would make the most sense, and that would add just a few seconds of delay)

If the nukes were installed when the buildings were constructed, how would anyone know where any ships would be to simulate the origin of a so called missile strike?

They wouldn't - at that time. The actual question is whether the detonation chain is set up to allow that kind of fine tuning at BOOM time. If I understand the intention properly, it was always a last-ditch contingency plan, not what they intended to happen if everything went right.

But would there have been enough time to set up the delays to make it seem as if the origin point was Mike's fleet?

Sure. If the capability was built in at the time the initial system was set up (or added later.) All it should take is someone with the appropriate authorizations to insert the desired delays into the network that triggers the explosions.

If it wasn't built into the network, no dice.

Although I seriously doubt if Albrecht has the experience to do it. Unless it's something as simple as a "make it look like it comes from this place" command, where this place could be a ship in orbit.

If they had reason to think of this as a contingency it's be pretty straightforward to build a point and click UI to trivially let an unskilled user pick the apparent signal origin. (Or just have a menu with a short selection of options. Captial City, Parking orbit, Lagrange One, Wormhole, etc)

The math of figuring out the delays for each nuke is trivial once you know where they are and where the bogus origin point will be.

But as you said it only works if the nukes allow you to address them individually and assign each an precise delay.

If I’d put all that effort into planting them I’d want a security and maintenance capability built in too. Which pretty much needs individually addressable unless you just want to know that there is a problem at one of these dozens of sites, which would seem unhelpful.

There are two, possibly three parts to this. (1) Bombs under the gamma Center, Detweiller Island, all the other on planet sites that had to be destroyed in 5 years upon the completion of Houdini in 5 years were built in or installed after-the-fact as needed to obliterate evidence. All or most of the off-planet explosions are irrelevant to the original plan.

(2) Then came the revamp and having to do final flourish, which includes all the ships that cannot or may not be able to escape because, at this point, there is no textev that Michelle ordered [or would order] no shipping leave the system.

(3) Pure speculation: we don't want all these deaths (of Onion members we couldn't get away) to go to waste so lets avail ourselves of our alpha line super-duper reporter and add a few flourishes of our own. And admittedly, 2&3 could well be the same plan.

“Admiral Gold Peak!”
The sheer shock in Dominica Adenauer’s voice whipped Michelle Henke around towards her flag deck’s tactical section.
“What?” she asked urgently.
“The sensors.” For the first time, ever, Dominica Adenauer seemed unable to find the words she wanted. Or needed, at any rate. “It’s…it’s—”
Adenauer made herself stop, made herself draw a deep breath, then squared her shoulders and looked across the top of her display at Michelle.
“We’ve just picked up a series of nuclear detonations, Ma’am,” she said in a voice of flattened iron.
“A series?” Michelle heard her own voice repeat.
“Yes, Ma’am. Most of them’re on the planet, but we have at least four in-space detonations, as well. One of them—” She stopped for a moment, drew another of those steadying breath. “Three of them were in fairly small installations. One of them was a single ship, really. But the fourth…the fourth took out Lagrange One.”

Do we have any textev that Mesa has a single largish moon? No moon, no Lagrange points.

Well, we could be looking at that completely wrong. Most of the cities were named after Scientists, why not name the Space Stations after them as well. On the other side of the system might have been O'Neil 1-4 for all we know.

But good catch.

well, IIRC they could be Sun-Mesa Lagrange points, not necessarily Mesa-'largish moon' Lagrange points

Explain to the physics dumbass like she's five please: what are Lagrange points?
