I could see plenty of reasons and ways it would be of real help to the Alignment to sneak a few people on to any ship. It wouldn't have to be officers, it could be the lowly enlisted man. They could do to Honor's ship what they did to Fillaretta (sp ;( ) or they could simply start grabbing secrets by collecting tech manuals and such from any place they can get them.

More over, this sort of subversive activity wouldn't be readily apparent as being caused by an infiltration.

After all the agent had to go to the Academy to get his or her commission, and you would need to have some way to slide forged background checks for security clearances into the navy files.
Not saying it would be impossible, it wouldn't be. But would the effort be worth it?

Probably far less risky to alter the orders of someone legitimately in the navy than to hack the computers to inject a complete outsider into the system and assign them to a ship.

And the MAlign is normally a long term enough planning organization that getting their agents recruited or accepted to naval academies so they're legitimately in place several years later isn't a big hardship...

Remember that the MAlign has a really effective form of bribery. They can claim at least that they'll help the person get ahead. If there are a few from an earlier generation, they can push a young person into jobs that lead to promotion.

If the Mesan alignment really wanted to get an agent into the RMN then the simplest way would be to use a fake slave and have them enlist once "rescued" by some do gooder RMN cruiser captain.

* Lack of family and background covered

* Legitamate reason to want to enlist

* Enough real cases to make it a mundane event

Don't forget, they already try this on Torch and accidentally used the same tongue code as another, already known, slave, and suicided instead of being caught.

The question is how many fake slaves successfully made it through over the years, and how many will in the future. If it was not for Torch's database of their citizens, they would not have detected the spy.

RFC said "refitting a Beowulfan SD to Manticoran standards would be just as difficult as refitting a standard SLN SD to those standards. In other words, it would be cheaper and faster to build new ships."

It is not necessarily all that difficult to get someone into the navy. They don't have to be an ex-slave. Have people taught enough to pass as refugees to some planets. They can enlist. Chances are there won't be all that much of a hassle. Granted, they won't be major officers, but if you got a top tech person, you could learn a real lot about weapons systems. Keep in mind that astrogators have enlisted working for them. Also tactical people.

I think Malign wanted to really keep a low profile so they kept things quiet. And the Sollies were not all that interested in what happened in Haven and Manticore.
