That's more or less my thoughts on it.

My understand from what gcomeau has posted is that gcomeau's contention is that the "average" owner of any gun other than a hunting rifle fits into that irrational category you described.

Daryl wrote:Gents, from outside your discussion it appears that you are each saying much the same thing in different ways.
My take is that most gun owners are responsible, but a small percentage are irrational believing that they have to carry a gun at all times to be safe.
An analogy is the current North Korea situation, where fat boy believes he needs nukes to protect himself, whereas if they weren't developing them no one would have paid them any mind. As it is the potential for an attack has risen because they are seen as a threat.

Aren't a significant proportion of guns owned by gun nerds? I.e. people who own them because they're nifty bits of tech rather for self-defense or other functional reasons.

I really only posted this so I could type gun nerds :D

If North Korea wasn't developing nukes and making noise about it they would be completely irrelevant, and a certain fat little spoiled brat just couldn't stand being irrelevant. So they waste resources they can't spare, just to be a nuisance.

A disarmed populace that attempts to fight back. This is scenario that is happening in Venezuela. Socialism that is excuse for seizing companies by corrupt government to benefit the supporters of the current regime. We can go back to seizing the oil fields from private companies to seizing the telephone and cellular companies to the systematic looting of this economy. This country has been disarmed for a long time and look the government is arming the government sponsored militia with machine guns. At one time, this country was the wealthiest country in South America. This country was exporting numerous products especially agricultural products and now they can not even feed their country. Recently the government has been caught on tape preparing to train individuals to assassinate the leaders of the street protests. The people are starving in that country.

DISARMED?

There are guns *everywhere* in Venezuela. Just the legally registered guns in the country place it middle of the pack globally for per capita firearms but there are illegal firearms all over the place. It's probably one of the most gun saturated nations in the world after the US.

Nope, Canadian. But lived in the US for 20 years.

I will now wait for you to draw whatever conclusions you think you can from that.

gcomeau, may I ask where you got this factoid? My understanding is that shortly after he became "President" (cum-dictator) Hugo Chavez instituted firearm seizures first in the Capital City and then throughout Venezuela.

I grant that there are very likely large numbers of illegally owned firearms throughout the country, but to be caught with one or especially using one either against thugs or government thugs (I repeat myself, sorry) will earn one either a long prison sentence or one simply "disappears" never to be seen or heard from again.

Now Hugo's successor Maduro is arming his supporters (those 'militia' another poster spoke of) with automatic weapons. Why would they need those except to keep the population cowed?
****

Just my opinion of course and probably not worth the paper it's not written on.

You're talking as if you think Venezuela is a functional first world state and can actually enforce that gun ban. It can't.

For cripes sake one of the biggest problems in their prisons is people being shot by inmates. Because they can't even keep the guns out of *the prisons*. And you think they can keep them off the streets?

This is from a few years ago.... it hasn;t exactly gotten better in the last several years.

I think that Canada needs to remove all weapons except hunting rifles and shotguns (single shot only no magazines).

Personally, I'd be happy if they made gun licenses/purchases dependant on sucessful completion of a proper gun safety course, appropriate to the gun involved.

Something along what the NRA does.
Hell, they'd be the perfect body to do all the mandatory stuff.

For reference and from memory (from a few years ago)
To go duck hunting down here you need to pass a duck recognition course.

The Sporting Shooters assoc run the courses but I think it's the government that conducts the exam.

Or "Run, Hide, and Tell!" that's the official UK police response to terrorist incident. I give them good credit for a good response time of 8 minutes from the first emergency call to the death of the losers!
