Why has this become such a mystery?? The person in authority is responsible for the actions of their subordinates.

Too many freaking lawyers designing too many loopholes.
Another name for loophole is noose... if you get to the top of the heap.

Over and over, we hear that authority or other advantages MUST have responsibility in close measure. One of the primary sins (pride) of many people is wanting the first, but not the second

What I find most disturbing is the lack of understanding that these "privileged" people do not seem to understand that they are poisoning their own wells with such caviler attitudes... it is nothing new but each new offender thinks he is smarter than the system.

What also may be disappointing is that the guilty may not have that much time to reflect upon their guilt. Such is usually the case with quick justice. Justice must be slow.

Not only for the guilty to reflect upon what they did wrong but for all the others who are thinking about illegal acts to also reflect on not doing the criminal act at all.

The problem with all of this is that Roger's sword is so swift. Perhaps facing down the evil eyes, muzzle and teeth of Dogzard is not enough to have them reflect upon their evil?

But ... an Emperor has to do what an emperor has to do. Let Dogzard get the condemned some attention for about 3 minutes, then let Doggie have more lunch. Then the sword trick. Repeatedly.

Lenix Mint 17 speell chck sucks totally. Ahh... the written English language. Separated by an ocean of divergence. :) :)

Part of the problem was that the defects only showed up under unusual stress and after fairly long delays. A personalized test program that was to be effective would have to take those factors into account, which would make the whole process less easily implemented.

The dogzard chow idea does have a certain appeal however...

Also the funny mental notion of "Patty Cake, Patty Cake!"... Or the "Patty Shuffle". Or the "Patty Stomp". I wonder on whom?

..."The FIRST four, (4) condemned were securely staked out in the designated spot inside the Imperial Park. Patty snorted happily.

Roger quickly mounted his old friend. "Well girl, this will not be nice but at least it will be quick". Wails and pleas echoed loudly.

Patty answered with a loud bugle. Roger leaned forward and asked Patty. "Are you sure you want to do this"? Patty grunted "YES"! ...

Sorry for the bad grammar. We can use our imagination. :)

The most important objection to this is that it would take too much of Roger's time. It would also foster the idea that Roger got a kick out of this kind of thing and that would cause problems in some places where he does not need problems. Better to use the existing standard mechanisms.

This does bring up a philosophical problem: Punishments, by definition, are cruel. If a crime is unusual, its punishment should be similarly unusual. Our own prohibition of both is necessarily one of degree, not of kind.

Max,
Not sure I agree that the punishment must be cruel, but... it should be proportional with he crime and it should be prompt and most of all... justice must be blind to "class and privileged" or it becomes a travesty.

Nimashet may be Roger's conscience, but he's also proven he's pretty damn fast with his hands; I believe one of the references is he's around viper quick. The only way she's stopping a possible shooting, is by disarming him before he goes in to any form of meeting, or meal. And since they've openly got more than a few open enemies, he's unlikely to be persuaded to disarm entirely.

And sword, or pistol, he's proven he's not only that 'viper quick', but that he's so damn coldly furious over the weapons malfunctions, that at least one and probably more like five-plus (depending on meeting size) are deadmen the second he has concrete proof and/or they admit to wrong-doing. Essentially, think that very first meal in the town near Cord's village (name escapes me, just this second), pop pop pop with spurts of blood against the far wall from headshots.

Then he'll sit back down, say something about "justice for Marduk", and calmly slice up a steak before looking at the survivors. "Don't cut corners, or I shall call you in for another meal with me."

Roger is in a tight spot. He is still not sure who is whom and who played what possible bad parts in the recent fleet and local events regarding his mom ... and the empire.

So what to do? He MUST reestablish his authority. Along with that comes the naggy responsibility. He must do what he must do. Even the graphic executions of known bad guys.

Enter Dogzard and Patty. Both are known literary characters with a proven track record of doing bad or good stuff in very graphic fashion that must be done at that time.

Also consider Roger's swift sword. With tele communications available in the time line it would be quite possible to televise the graphic executions? Prime time live?

Enter the little cute lizard mind reading aliens who helped Roger get back on his feet after returning to Earth. Verified. Convicted. Condemned. Live broadcasted to all.

Yikes! Let the chomping, stomping and slicing begin! :)

And as been recently proven with the Volkswagen Emissions Scandal they can always design the weapons in question to fool the testing equipment or environment.
