I know we had that interesting occasion with Honor. But much too brief.

Armsmen on Torch could be rather interesting as well.

I WANT IT WITH ALL THE FIRE IN MY SOUL.

Hell, give me The West Wing: Haven Edition. Give me Eloise's brilliant, erudite, sesquipedalian staff endlessly roaming the halls of Pericard Tower discussing the inner workings of the Havenite government. Give me Eloise commanding instant respect whenever she walks into a room. Give me Eloise saying, "This starship is going to Manticore!" Give me Eloise being a complete fucking badass every day of the week, and her staff not-so-subtly swooning at it.

*whimpering noises*

THIS SO MUCH

Especially that first press conference when Havenite CJ announces the new treaty with Manticore.

All of the little Havenite kids and many officer's sentiment...

"You mean the big bad boogeymander will no longer get us?"

I'm pretty sure that Eloise's return to Haven in the wake of ART could form the basis for an entire novel of its own, given all the political horsetrading that must have been going on behind the scenes.

...I WANT IT.

Bill Woods wrote:But the peace treaty was sold while Pritchart was out of town. And it couldn't have been too hard, since only 11 Havenite senators voted against it, out of at least 200. The gist of the treaty was negotiated while Honor was at Haven; they basically just dropped the reparations section and added the alliance(s) against the Malign and the League.

Indeed Bill.

But as I remember it, that was also where the horse trading began. I remember Honor herself putting her empathic finger on it. I can't remember the wholeass' name, but Honor sensed that he wanted something specific from Pritchart and her administration. IIRC, Honor called him on it and adjourned the entire meeting to give Pritchart, who was surprised that Honor had banged the political nail so squarely on its head, time to appease the idiot. As I recall, that specific delay was what prevented the culmination of the entire affair then, because Honor was recalled.

"Horse trading am I," was pretty much acknowledged by Pritchart.

I imagine that the 11 holdouts didn't get what they want. I also imagine that 'those-it-may-concern' were authorized to continue the horse trading in Pritchart's absence per Pritchart's request per Pritchart's instructions.

And remember, Pritchart's political opponents wanted the war to end just as much as anyone else. Even they knew that Haven's survival depended on it. Honor sensed that. They were just political opportunists.

I also imagine that the overall fear of the four meter tall Boogeymander did lots to sway the man in the street and his frightened little kids.[/quote]

Another fine POV RFC didn't afford us...

I don't know 'bout y'all, but I grow ever more curious about what's tagged as the Third Battle of Yeltsin's Star. It is also a reprimand to myself, and any others who may have overlooked the strategic savvy of one Patricia Givens in the Top Ten Tacticians/Strategists thread for her conception of a heckuva end-around football call.

White Haven struts a little tactical acumen as well doesn't he?

wikia wrote:In anticipation of the impending First Havenite-Manticoran War, Second Space Lord Vice Admiral Patricia Givens suggested a plan to Admiral Caparelli to deceive the People's Navy into believing Sebastian D'Orville's Second Fleet in the Yeltsin's Star System had sent four battle squadrons to Talbot Station and entice the PN to attack Grayson.

In fact, four battle squadrons under Admiral White Haven were surreptitiously detached from Home Fleet. With such reinforcements, the temporarily enlarged Second Fleet was established.

Manticoran Prime Minister Allen Summervale approved the plan after consulting with Lord Michael Mayhew, Protector Benjamin IX's heir. (HH3)

Order of battle

Aside from commanding officer's names, a detailed order of battle is unknown. As second in command in the Second Fleet - Admiral D'Orville - was in the position to command a task force. Admiral Wesley Matthews was in charge with the Grayson Space Navy. (HH3)

Strengths

Manticoran Alliance forces

Royal Manticoran Navy Second Fleet was comprised of about 12 battle squadrons.[1] Screen included GSN and RMN forces. This screen included the squadron where Jackson Kriangsak were positioned towards the Havenite Fleet's flank.. [2]

People's Navy

Estimated strength of Fleet Admiral Parnell’s task force was about 86 ships of wall, which made an equivalent of 11 battle squadrons.[3]

Course of battle

Earl White Haven used his stealth systems and low-powered wedges to keep the Peeps from seeing his additional units. (HH9)

The battle was fought at the same time as the First Battle of Hancock. Admiral Parnell's units were savagely mauled by the allied forces in the ambush prepared by the Second Fleet: the People's Navy task force lost half of its ships of the wall. (HH3)

Analyzing the course of battle later Admiral Jackson Kriangsak confirmed that had Admiral Parnell been any lesser of a tactitian in the course of battle, the entire invading force would have been lost, but easily evaded the Manticoran Screen best in position to complete the envelopment. (HH9)

I think this POV is primed as a subsequent flashback of sorts. I get curiouser and curiouser. :D

Judging by the pattern of past appearances, my lover (no, not Eloise, that's my wife -- and no, not Theisman, that's my other lover -- I'm talking about Allen Higgins here!) is due for an appearance in the upcoming novel.

PLEASE DO NOT LET HIM BE SHAT UPON BY THE UNIVERSE THIS TIME. Please give him a victory, if not an outright triumph of a rout that involves terrified Solarians running from him whilst collectively crapping their drawers. Please let the poor man not need another round of therapy. PLEASE KEEP HIM SAFE AND ALIVE AND SANE AND PREFERABLY VICTORIOUS.

(Also please marry him off to me, but that's a wish upon a star and I know it.)

I'm all for that Rose. It would be nice to see Allen get a chance at redemption. All through the series we've witnessed officers who were given a chance to redeem themselves.

Let's see, there was Giscard (sorry Rose), Terekhov, Genevieve Chin, Hamish (after getting his heiny sorely spanked endlessly at Trevor's Star) and even Honor herself, which led to my most favorite and chill-bumping one liner...
"We meet again, Admiral Tourville," she said, and her soprano voice was cold.

So yea, I vote for Allen Higgins receiving his redemption-op ticket on chip too!

And give the man a little wind beneath his wings this time, with Alice Truman's squadron of CLACs. And it'll even be okay if Truman still has to remain behind, to watch his back.

After all, behind every successful man stands a woman - kicking him in his ass to produce!

Ahem, sorry Rose. I totally meant it in a positive way. Honest!

We were always afforded the POV of Elizabeth's of her displaying gratitude and recognition of Honor. She showered her with many gifts - much to Honor's chagrin.

It sure would have been nice to see that side of Eloise. Of course, she doesn't have the royal piggy bank to play with as Elizabeth, but acknowledgement, praise and satisfaction goes a long way. I would have loved to see Shannon patted on the back for her "Oops." Or for her part in Harrington's escape from Tepes, her doing the morally right thing. For Theisman to be patted on the back by Elly. Perhaps in a "Sit down, why don't you. I've been meaning to share my pleasure with you... with you."

How does Shannon handle praise? As beet red as Honor?

Besides, there are many Havenites that deserve it. To think that there was a time that what they got, was a bullet to the head.

Is the education system so lacking on Haven that they've never heard of positive reinforcement?

I'd also like to see other officers on Manticore praised. That's one sure thing I LOVED about Honor. Her quiet teaching style. And her overabundance of praise.

You'll pull out your heart to please someone like that.

Why, you'd even follow them to hell and back.

I remember mention of this somewhere in textev, but was a formal passage offered of it? And surely, after the prodigal spy returned with Cachat, he was off the hook.

Speaking of disavow, Cachat is probably on permanent "disavowment" from Haven. He probably carries papers to that effect in his pocket. "In case this rogue idiot gets caught or screws up by the numbers, we assure you we knew NOTHING about it."

There were a couple of mentions at the start of "Crown of Slaves, to wit:

...That very morning, in fact, and by his lover Cathy Montaigne.

"I think Mommy was right," whispered Berry. "You should have worn your uniform."

"They put me on half-pay," he growled. "I'm supposed to wear that silly dress uniform—most uncomfortable thing I own—afterward? Like a poodle sitting up to beg forgiveness?"

Again, the majordomo and the officers got stiff-faced. But Elizabeth simply gave Anton a long and considering look. "No, that you haven't," she said. "Someday you'll have to tell me all the details of what happened in Chicago, but I know enough about the affair to understand the heart of it. Two swine gave you a choice between being a father and having a career, and you shoved the choice right down their throats."

It was not, Anton reflected, normally considered appropriate for a monarch to refer to her ambassador to the most powerful star nation in the galaxy and to one of her more senior admirals as "swine." Not that Elizabeth seemed concerned by the thought.

"Did you hesitate at all?" she asked.

"Not for a second." He moved his massive shoulders in a little shrug. "Being a beachcomber's not so bad, when you get down to it."

"Good. I believe I can trust a man who isn't afraid of being on the beach when he has to."

I think he is still 'independent', that is, he is not a part of the Government/Crown, but obviously he is now closely associated with them.

I've always thought it would be a nice touch if Admiral Higgins could get his own back in company with one of my favorite hard-luck characters, Geneviene Chin. I imagine them as commanding the remaining GA forces in Manticore (once Honor, Tourville, et. al have gone off to whip on the SL/MAligment) and confronting those 600 ISLN SD's from Tasmania (which did not get the word in time to stop their operation).

UNlikely, but you never know...
