Snippet #3 is a bit hard to place but it seems to me that it belongs after #4.

Thoughts?

Snippet #4 follows #3 in story timeline, as it represents a flashback from Merlin's POV. Very reminiscent of his reviewing what Father Paityr revealed about the Stone and the 1000 year return while Merlin piloted his recon skimmer back.

#4 also has Merlin reacting to the last statement in #3.

I have updated the descriptions of the snippets as to clarify the chronological order.

This is a little bit off-thread, but I think it needs to be said:

We're all sitting around, frustrated, eagerly awaiting the weekend and the next snippet, but we're not alone. Think about RFC; he's created this magnificent book, the nth in a fantastic series, and he wants to get it out there where his enthusiastic fans can read it and appreciate it. He's proud of it, and wants to show it to the world ASAP! Unfortunately, the realities of the publishing world limit him to only a small snippet each week.
If I'm right in my surmise, he's just as frustrated by the bit by bit snippet process as we are, and we should regard him as a fellow sufferer, not "one of them".
Any way, keep up the good work, RFC; we're with you!

Hi, Joat42

Just in case no one else has thanked you for your efforts on our behalf, I would like to take this opportunity to do so. Thank you very much.

Just out of curiosity on payments to authors (see upthread), are the upfront payments in addition to a percentage of sales royalty or are they just an advance on those royalties?

It depends on the author involved, usually an advance is payment for work submitted.

When JK Rowling was starting out she received IIRC 750 USD and her publisher printed 1000 copies 500 sold to bookstores and 500 given to public libraries. IIRC the second printing was 200000 copies, third printing 500000. Then her agent had a bidding war for US publishing rights and she received about 100000 USD.
