Just borrow a page out of the jungle warfare handbook - when in doubt, get rid of the foliage. Aka, burn the forest to the ground.

Or tunnel underneath. Heck, get the Black Dwarves to do the tunneling.

I should think even Ghouls would have trouble climbing a 20-30 foot high perfectly smooth stone wall.

Start with the Forts & extend out perhaps. Would take like forever to build but it seems the Ghouls will still be around for a long time.

The Dwarves may not be willing to risk their stone workers (I'm not going to attempt to spell the proper Dwarven name for them). You'd need a significant armed force to protect all of the people building the wall and the stone workers who fuse the stone into a single, smooth wall.

Besides, who says ghouls can't figure out how to build and use scaling ladders? Twenty or thirty feet may be a bit on the short side.

I'm basing this wall on the dam described in the book, which was dug down to bedrock then had loose rock piled inside forms, only then did the rock guy show up & do his stuff.
So for each section of the wall the rock guys can be quickly escorted in & out.

I would expect the ghouls to come up with scaling ladders - but then what do they do?

1. fight on the wall?, try to take a tower? - they would take heavy losses to kill only a few (if any) troops.

2. drop down the other side & go raiding toward the river? - what happens the the ladders? leave them behind to be destroyed or take them along on the raid... which would really slow them down.

3. leave a force to hold the wall while another goes raiding? - don't think the ghouls can plan this well without the Devils.

The great wall of China's primary purpose was to cut off raiding forces line of retreat, not stop them getting into China.

Are we sure that any of the female and young ghouls survived? None were seen on the campaign and whilst it was surmised that they had been removed to a safe distance, none of the devils seemed the type to be concerned about this, nor does the history of the ghouls who eat their own young when needed suggest it. The devils were there for quite a while before we saw them and they looked to have quite an appetite.
It wouldn't be unexpected that the dark Gods only think about short term goals and end up causing set backs for themselves.

So wand wizards need items to do magic. DO wizards need to make them, to use them?
Magic was a big thing in the old empire, so many of the artifacts that survived the fall may indeed have magical properties.
Wencit has faced and dealt with wizard for over a thousand years, how many things has he salvaged over the years?
Can mages use these items?

My guess as to the disposition of Cassan's lands is that it would go to the son since he has no knowledge of actual treason. This particular world seems to tolerate disloyal thoughts and words as long as they don't become actual treason.

Cassan Jr (the daughter) will probably actually end up being the real bad guy on the local level. She's probably ruined as marriage material and with no hope of getting a puppet husband, might settle for a puppet brother. Between that and daddy getting decrapitated, I could see her turning to the Dark They for some added villain power.

For the series as a whole, I see one to three more books, depending on how detailed Weber plans to be. Based on the pace up to now, I'd guess two books.

The next book is about poor Leeann being forced to squeeze out a 20 pound baby and keep it alive while its daddy is drawn into the war with the wizards. Weird things happen around the kid and... OMG, he's a wild mage on top of being an incredibly long lived half hrdani!! Between daddy getting the wild magic spurts in combat and mom coming from a long line of women with the sight, it seems to follow.

The last book is about the new young adult wild mage half hradani tying up loose ends and finally closing the universe off to the dark They altogether.

Those are my guesses anyway...

But after the epilogue, there were quite a few loose threads that were tied up... and several that weren't. One key one that hasn't been resolved was Thorandas and Shairnayith. I suspect that Brayahs was right and Thorandas will be proven innocent of knowing treason (and almost certainly be just as angry over it as Dahlnar was). But what about Shairnayith? Cassan worked very hard to keep her in technical ignorance of his most evil actions, yet she still loved her father and agreed with at least his intentions. (For that matter, Thorandas agreed with at least some of his intentions as well.) She might have objected to his methods... but then again, she might not have.

Yet the majority of the Sothoii are now apparently thinking along lines such as "hey, I may still not like the hradani, but if the Dark wants me fighting them then I'm [blank]-well going to do the exact opposite and spit in their face!", how will that affect Thorandas and Shairnayith? Will they be among the converts to this new way of thinking? Will one of them grudgingly accept the new reality and the other refuse, and will their betrothal be broken up because of it? Will they both be stubborn holdouts who refuse to accept the new reality? And if so, will Thorandas be disowned for it? For that matter, is she even a Baron's sister and an appropriate "rank match" for Thorandas anymore? Given that her father has died a traitor's death she's obviously no longer a Baron's daughter, but did her brother inherit the Barony? Or is that in limbo pending investigation? Or what?

Anybody want to make some guesses here?

Back to the beginning of the thread...

Did anyone else get the distinct feeling that Shairnayith, while not being directly told by her father what he was doing, was a whole lot more knowledgeable and agreeable to what he was planning? I've a feeling that the wedding will be off, and Shairnayith will be encouraged with going off to settle on a remote holding and contemplate, alone and without visitors, the fact that she wasn't convicted of treason. (Similar to what happened to the nobles involved in the assassination of King Roger in the Honor Harrington series.)

While his son may have been more of an idiot, if he inherits he can expect lots of visits from Champions, Magi, and Wind Riders.

My expectation is that the baby turns out to BE Wencit - who in the future will time-travel to the far past in order to setup the final defeat of Kontovar.
I don't have time to go looking for the quotes from the books, but it has been stated that magic will allow time travel to the past (but not the future), that you need to be at least half-human in order to be a wizard, and at least half-Hradani in order to access the wild magic inside all matter.

I could see that too. I was thinking more along the lines that Wencit is nearing the end of his couple of millenium lifespan since he's described as an old man and that since a half Hrdani lifespan boosted by wild magic would make him effectively immortal, that he'd be Wencit's successor and provide that happily ever after protection from bad magic (or at least an opening for a new series).

When you do go looking for the quotes, look very closely at them. They specifically state that you can't travel backward in your own universe.

Thus, your theory, though amusing, is a non-starter.
