Strange... Considering that they have reactionless drives, and so the Terror of Rocket Evaluation (long live Tsiolkovsky!) is no longer a problem...

Reactionless drives doesn't negate relativistic impacts on ships.

how about taking a couple thousand people, get them to the nearest asteroid belt and plant infrastructure there. :) As far as I remember, the orbital platform was shooting at probes in the first book, only after they get close, so it would probably have difficulties to target something as far away as 20-30 light minutes. I am not even sure it is able to do so in first place. Sure, if it can target something it can shoot it down, the range is irrelevant. But probably not in Oort cloud :)

The platform shoot SNARC's on several thousand kilometers because it was running on max stealth, and platform detected it only relatively close. The SNARC that tried to go active was destroyed immediately , presumably at far bigger range. And SNARC's are small and VERY stealthy. Assault shuttle would probably be detected long before.

I don't remember which book but we had Merlin thinking about the limits or cryosleep. Apparently (IIRC) a hundred year sleep was the longest possible one.

Fireflair wrote:I can't remember where it was mentioned but I'm pretty certain we have text ev that tells us that the cryosleep was not usable to go the thousand years, even with breaks to wake up and stretch. The TF which arrived at Safehold lived long lives, thanks to their nanites and medical sciences, and the cryosleep would let them extend the duration of their lives a great deal. It wouldn't get them the 1000 years until the archangels returned.

You're not far off, Drak...

Emphasis mine...

"So far as he knew, no one had ever used the cryo suspension systems for a period greater than thirty or forty years. Theoretically, they were supposed to be good for up to a century and a half. But nine centuries?"

So ya'll think the steam powered, aqualator driven BOLO is a no go?

Come on!

The only way that could be better is if we figure out a way to download a copy of OWL into it and let him do the deed!

Seriously, HIMSELF has a plan. He ALWAYS has a plan and his plans always work. It might not be the same plan as he had in mind when OAR was released (HIMSELF has proven to be flexible with his planning if nothing else), but it's still a plan. Besides, how many times have we discovered that he was withholding certain crucial facts that were meant to be known but ended up under the red of an editor's pen?

I just hope he gets to stick his head in here occasionally to see what ideas the rest of us come up with. It should be good for at least a silent chuckle on occasion.

With all respect, but platform programming may not be even compatible with OWL's, not to mention that nobody except Archangels probably have enough clearance to install any new software.

There is the small matter that Pei Shan-Wei's sleeper cells were reassigned from the Alexandria enclave to various other enclaves in Administrator's Langhorne's official roster. That meant that she had to have had a backdoor to his computer system. If it was on the "Hamilclar", it might have been salvaged and still exist (with that backdoor). The problem is, did she leave a record behind in Merlin's cave?

Even if such backdoor existed, during the War Against the Fallen the system was clearly changed several times against exactly that kind of threat. Not to mention that if system was AI-equipped (even rather primitive AI), it probably constantly improved its firewalls. By now, 1000 years after, two systems may not even be compatible anymore.

In worst case scenario, the Rakurai may be linked with the Temple with quantum encryption. Which means that without the access to the Temple-based linked particle, the system would not be possible to penetrate.
