I think the limiting factor is that they work best within a low range of rpm's plus that their compression ratio is quite low - only about 3:1 because at higher ratios it's easy for them to ignite the fuel before the piston is at the top.

I suppose it's possibly to build 2 or cylinder variants but I don't know enough to judge how well that would work.
