I installed it on my previous computer (this one is new since this past summer) and played with the Safehold globe. I thought it was really interesting, though because you were working with a not as detailed map, it was hard to use it to follow the more recent books. But it definitely brought home many of the distance/time problems discussed in the book.

I'd be interested in seeing some of the intermediate efforts, though not if it delays you in getting the final globe done.

I am glad you are redoing this, it will make re-reading the series that much more enjoyable

Thanks!!

Doing another STUPID 2am combination YouTube viewing session and Celestia sort-of-coding.

I THINK I copied our own Moon to Safehold, and doubled the Albedo to 0.24.

Heads up on progress so far:

From Buckley's 5th Imperium Website...
http://infodump.thefifthimperium.com/series/Safehold/

I downloaded the big 27000x13499 map at
Map of the planet Safehold (as of Midst Toil and Tribulation) [ Added May 28, 2012 ]
http://infodump.thefifthimperium.com/en ... hold/338/1
http://infodump.thefifthimperium.com/im ... d_MTnT.jpg

THEN I scaled it to 27000x13500.
YES, that one pixel makes a difference.
Celestia is expecting perfect 2:1 ratio texture files, although it prefers those whose dimensions are powers of 2.
Example:
131072 pixels wide by 65536 pixels tall
(2^17 wide) by (2^16 tall).

THEN I scaled the five September 2016 maps available at
http://www.davidweber.net/downloads/ind ... t/series:6

Then I loaded them into "GIMP 2" (an open source alternative to Photoshop), and via trial and error decided on some zoom percentages:
Saram Bay ~19.4%
Dohlar 14.5%
North 22.0%
Gorath Bay 8.0%
Temple 220.0%
Safehold_MTnT 100%
Note that the Temple lands closeup is the only one that will have DISTORTION because it's being enlarged to ~220%.
This is also why I'm thinking about leaving that one as a separate layer that can be turned on or off.

The project file from GIMP is available for anyone to download off of Selden's web site.

Also, I exported a copy with the base map in transparent mode, and the close up maps stitched together as on image; that is also available at Selden's web site.

Not yet done:

- Any other changes to the moon

- Figuring out how to load an entirely separate ISS around Safehold, not Earth as a stand in for the OBP.

- Determining and saving the lat. & long. for various cities, and including them in the add-on.

- Test, test, and more test.

My memory says that there was some sort of an Asian sounding name assigned to the OBP / Orbital-Bombardment-Platform, but I can't for the life of me remember what it is.

Can anyone refresh my memory?

I'm currently attaching the ISS to Safehold, and it may be a better idea to right from the get go give it a different name, besides "iss" or "obp" that is.

Never mind...

"Rakurai was a Safeholdian term based on the Japanese word for "lightning bolt"."
