RFC did however ignore Out of the Dark.

It could be argued that the deus-ex-machina ending is itself a reference to OOTD.

Because, the AE ending is most definitely not an example of d.e.m. even though it must have looked like one of those to the defendants of Earth.

AE? Do you mean EA, Excalibur Alternative? If so, then OotD had sufficient foreshadowing regarding the vampires. I will allow that the powers of RFC's vampires came as a mild surprise, but not that Vlad was a vampire. The turning into mist implies a spiritual element in intelligence and would have done better with some earlier introduction, but was consistent with the powers reputed to be a vampire's.

The Japanese call it an Omake, or an extra.

RFC alternate ending is what one thinks about writing when one has a deadline comeing up in two hours, one is woking on pages 75-95 and nothing is working, and one haveen't slepted in two weeks. :D

I think the thought of Hradani in fifth imperium battle armor is enough to give Sharna nightmares

Excellent! Though Cayleb Baytz should have been reading 'Honor Bound' when the attack came in. :D

It seems to me orbits would be changing just a bit!

I suspect that if you can toss around that much mass in hyperspace of some kind, repositioning planetary orbits will not be that difficult. If nothing else, you can simply put the starships in the right place for a gravity tug until you have the orbit you want.

When I first saw this, I thought maybe RFC had been inspired by this bit of madness:

(I don't watch the show, but saw the clip on another board)

Brilliant! Thank you for giving away how all those novels actually end in the end.
