The coastal ironclads will be less disadvantaged in that regard, but they will still be inferior to a “proper” blue water design. In terms of being able to hammer sailing galleons, it’s unlikely (shall we say) that an unarmored galleon could hope to survive against one of them under any conditions which would allow the galleons to fight effectively, of course, but the degree to which that might be true could vary considerably.

And, no, I haven’t given you the details on either the Delthak II or Eraystor designs.

:? Are the City-class coastal ironclads Domnyk Staynair thinks about in Snippet 8 the Eraystors or yet another class the Charisians are building? :?

The first City-class is Eraystor, which means that a lot of people --- heck most people --- are going to label them in terms of the lead ship of the class. They're called the "Cities" for the same reason the Delthak and Delthak II classes are called the "Rivers;" they've established that the nomenclature will be drawn from the names of rivers and/or cities. Properly speaking, there is no such thing as a Delthak II class because there's no ship named Delthak II, but that didn't prevent various Charisians from thinking of them that way, and I did that deliberately because people do things like that. ;)

RFC,
Thanks for taking the time to reply. As usual, thought-provoking stuff.

My mental image of a Delthak looking aft on the starboard side – bulwark rail (2-3ft high), side deck 2-3ft wide with a 4 ft high belt of armor on the inboard side, the armored casement beginning at the top of this belt of armor.
The lower edge of the gunports is 2 -3 ft above the top of the bulwark and 3-4 ft inboard from the bulwark.

I'm guesstimating 5-10 ft of freeboard which puts the ports at 9 – 14 ft above the water.

I don't have a feel for how much she'd be rolling. In my offshore experience, 3 offshore passages on a 35 ft sloop, with winds never getting above force 7, the worst rolling, and that was so rhythmic it couldn't be called uncomfortable, came when we were broad reaching. Wave crests were much further apart than what I've experienced in bay sailing (Buzzards Bay, Casco and Penobscot bays) in the same winds.

I liked your example of the wave rolling up a cliff. My experience is all on relatively much lighter sailboats where the boat would ride up the wave and not try to play cliff. Perspective is everything, isn't it?

If that 4 ft belt of armor is the freeboard and the armored casement comes directly to the edge of the hull with little or no side deck, then yeah, I can see she'd be a really wet boat.

I wonder if the KH VII's might be towing a few of the Eraystor class.

Huzzah for RunsForCelery!

Thanks you always for your fascinating educational posts!

MTaT hinted at the mechanical gear that opened and closed the river ironclad gun ports, has that been improved as well?

Any snippet or post from RFC is good if not great!

That's really helpful, thanks. :D And, yes, it sounds like just the kind of thing people would do.

However over on page 2 of the 'HFQ Official Snippet #8' thread, JMBM has re-posted details of the Delthak II design allegedly posted by yourself last year. (I only spotted that this morning)

Oops? ;)
