If Khapahr had an audience to convince, it would have been inquisitors. They wouldn't take kindly to his admission of respect. If this was faked and he was wearing balaistic underwear, there would be no blood to convince onlookers. The only options I see are either Khapahr truly did try to kill Thirsk or he shot Thirsk knowing he wore ballistic undies as a prelude to kill any inquisitors present.
Of the two options the former tings truer. Thirsk would be really reluctant to trust anyone from Charis. He would have to to be wearing ballistic undergarments. It is more likely that Thirsk was shot by Khapahr.
We don't know what preceded this. Thirsk may well have been driven to the point where he had no choice but to defect, and he had had a visit from a female seijin who provided him with the ballistic undies and a blood bag which bursts convincingly when it is shot - we just don't know. We don't even know how far into the book this except is from is it from near the end, when it has become obvious that the church has lost. It it just after Thirsk gets his first look at the Haarld VII' and realizes his navy is completely screwed regardless of what he does, or when or the circumstances following it. Is the shot fired just before a group of inquisitors burst in the door to arrest Thirsk for questioning, or what.
