AND THERE WAS COVER ART!!! (Yes, I'm excited.)

I've got no idea what the final art will look like. But I stumbled across this on Dave Seeley's website. And since it is already on the internet, I figured you should get to know it's out there.

Very nice. I've nearly finished rereading the first book in preparation for book 3 (even though that won't be till next year :( ). It's different from the cover of book 1. The Sharonans look very German, apart from their uniforms being brown instead of grey. Also, the dragon looks more like a fellbeast. Overall the whole thing looks more realistic. I hope we can get it as a poster. The only problem is it says it was taken/painted 2 years ago. Is that an error?

AsIRecallTheBook, the dragon is flying by at 200MPH.

The Pilot is laying prone on the dragon's neck,
behind a windscreen grown from it's scales.
He cannot stand up on the neck as if rowing a boat;
the dragon flies much too fast!

Yeah, I started HHNF yesterday and noticed that. HG's cover has an Arcanan soldier on a barded horse, wielding an axe, so I guess it's too much to expect the artist to read through the book.

As has been pointed out in other forums, artists generally don't get the opportunity to read the book, generally they get "give me a picture of a guy on a rearing horse with an axe hitting a guy on the ground and blood flying" sort of instructions.

I read an article about '50s sci fi and that problem. They always seemed to default to some monster or robot holding a screaming woman even if that had nothing to do with the story.

Also my original post seems to be a bit sarcastic when, as I said, I knew that artists are too busy to be reading through every book they do.

I've always thought that the cover of a book is intended to reflect the general direction of the story. If you look at Star Trek TNG books, (of which there were over 70), only one of the books actually had a cover that was a scene in the actual book itself (I can't remember which book it was, but it had Riker in a snowstorm, confronting a bear-like monster).
The cover of RTH has someone on a dragon facing off against people using artillery..
That seems to match the general thrust of the story...

I can't write anywhere near as well as Weber
But I try nonetheless, And even do my own artwork.

It is Battle Dragons where the pilot rides that way and the dragon moves that fast. As I understand the descriptions on Transport Dragons the pilot rides as shown in the picture and carries a staff of some type which he can use like spurs.
