So did the Honor and the Amazing Electricolor "Treecat" picture get the axe?

Uh... NO!

This looks very much like a 2000AD character illustration, and would fit nicely into their sort of dystopian futures. It doesn't resemble my conceptions of Nimitz at all.

Treecats have fur. They are cold-weather adapted, so they have lots of fur. Think fluffy - Fluffy the Terrible if necessary, especially once riled up, but fluffy.

We have fairly specific descriptions of the fur patterns, as well, including that male treecats have rings on their tail indicating their age. We also know that the tail is fluffy and a fairly constant thickness to the end. We have descriptions of their build, their heads, their faces. This doesn't conform to any of them.

I would expect the 'cats to look quite scary when angered, but not when calm. They might (I stress might) have little cues like fangs that can't quite be hidden (miniature sabretooth - no end of cartoon and manga examples to show that can look outright cute) if the artist so desires, but they should look family-friendly until it is time to unleash mayhem, if nothing else because of the dichtomy between the playful companion and deadly comrade-in-arms. That thing looks like it can't not look evil - which really doesn't work for the companion of the hero(ine).

On the other hand, Honor herself doesdn't look too bad. The outfit looks a bit too informal for a military uniform, but might work if the movie follows the scheme of the shipsuit (daily work wear) and skinsuit (counter-pressure space suit) being the same thing.

What part of that image makes you think of a cat?

Why not throw in sparkly vampires while we are at it?
If we are going to throw out the most endearing aspects of the story line then what is the point? I am starting to get the feeling of a Terminator Salvation left turn here.

What do you think the reaction would be like? Yeah, the same as the one here to this demonic alien lizard being passed off as an Honorverse treecat. That should tell someone that they need to get a clue--don't mess around with well-defined canon.

Pokermind collected these images of fan-art Nimitzes in the main TOH:

Now, those images reflect the canon description. Which would you want? Yeah, I thought so too. Get that Mass Effect refugee out of here!

I also think David has been quoted as saying the image of Samantha, aside from the long legs, on the cover of Changer Of Worlds is the closest to his image of a treecat.

Also remember that the Mayhew children went bonkers over Sam and Nimitz's kittens, because they were VERY cute and adorable fuzzy cuddly furballs--which basically means that treecats facially very much resemble Earth domestic cats.

That last picture is what I have always envisioned. Think Cat/centaur the first two limbs are true hands not feet! He can slink around with all six limbs but mostly will only use the back four.

I like centaur stance too. Here is a reworked Genkis sketch
for the Harrington Treecats ;)

Are you certain that the evil treecat is notstrangling the human?

I don't need everything to be just like the books, but this would keep me from buying the graphic novels!
