Evergreen is providing artistic and concept direction across all of the platforms involved, including the comic books. Production deadlines are tight for comic books, but I saw the proposed art, the proposed script/dialog, and an electronic proof of the final art --- and had the opportunity to comment upon/suggest revisions to them --- before the first issue went to print. So did Evergreen. Because of the short production time and the fact that so many people are involved in the process, there were a limited number of fixes that we could make. As one example, it was possible for Top Cow --- at Evergreen's direction --- to go back and drop in the proper rank insignia (which had been lacking in the original art), but there was no time to make any further adjustments in the uniforms themselves. There was simply insufficient flex to go back and reo something that fundamental to the original art. By the same token, the conformation of the impeller wedge was changed from one in which the kilt was deeper than the throat to the reverse, but there wasn't time to completely redo the panel in which Fearless accelerates away after launching her successful grav lance strike on D'Orville's flagship.

I don't know at this time exactly where the uniforms are going to end up in future issues, although the concept development they've shared with me (and with you) is certainly hopeful. I can even see some arguments against making major changes in the early issues of a long series of comic which are just getting their feet under them. The fact that I discussed the changes which were made with Evergreen and that the e-mails confirming that they were being addressed came from Evergreen seems to me to be fairly conclusive evidence that changes Evergreen wants will be made. Given that --- and that the general tone of their response to me when I made the same point about gender and ethnic mix was more or less "D'oh! How did we miss that?" --- I'm fairly optimistic that the issue will be addressed.

Thank you for the update (and the reassurance) on Evergreen's thoughts on the points those on the forums have raised. I have seen the Evergreen Rep logged in a time or two, but was unsure how much they had a chance to react. Here is hoping that the trend continues.

Frankly I have to agree with the opinion that graphics should remain consistent, no matter how much I dislike the abomination they've made of Nimitz.
Once they finish OBS and change the artist, then the uniforms, ships, Nimitz, etc can/should be changed, with a foreword explaining that the new graphical design was used to be more in line with the books, and would continue to change and evolve.

On the one hand, I can understand the desire not to throw the "Honorverse virgin" readers by making changes in the first 5-issue arc ...

On the other hand, they did include the new uniforms in their design process bonuses, on page 31; which would be a total waste of a page if they didn't intend to do something about the uniforms in the near future.

On the gripping hand a large part of the race (if not gender) issue could be handled merely by a change of tincture to show different skin colors, which step is after the art has been drawn and inked, so may have been doable for issue #2; gender-mix and other racial phenotype markers than coloration could have to wait for issue #3, if the art was drawn (probably not inked) by the time they caught up with the problem. ... all of this is assuming Evergreen passed the word to Top Cow forthwith.

My WAG is that the uniforms will change (maybe gradually from issue to issue) within the first 5-issue arc, while they will wait for the second arc (tHotQ) before changing Nimitz and other parts for which they haven't released updated concept art (besides Nimitz such as Marine skinsuits with face-plates rather than -masks, ship-design updates, etc.).

That way it will look to the "casual reader" and "artist-centric reader" as if these updates are differences in artistic interpretation and expression between the different artists, rather than changes from on high being forced on the beloved artists of the latter.

Could save us from the bad press of quite a few vicariously hurt feelings.

I enjoyed that interview. I'm not a comic book person, but I might just go out and buy them now.

I have read and enjoyed the first issue of the comic. I am still a little put out by the fierceness of Nimitz. I am not seeing any of the aproachable cuddly playful cat from the books. He looks like something I would not want to be locked in a compartment with much less have children play with.

I look forward to the second issue and hope to see a softer less threatening treecat.
