If You are interested in the 1600's it was illegal for a Catholic to hold High Office in England

The King granted Land in the New World

If You want to know where Freedom of Religion in America comes from study
Baltimore & Calvert

It's still illegal for the English Monarch to be anything other than Protestant, though they are now allowed to marry a Catholic. (As of 2012 I think it was)

The problem with Freedom of Religion is the right wing evangelicals see it as a freedom of their own sect or faith to enforce themselves onto others.
Anything that challanges that is opression.

An attitude that isn't just in the USA either. It's far to prevelent down here in Oz these days.

Then You would have had a problem with the Original 13 Colonies because they had An Official State Religion - It was not till The 14th Amendment that changed

Well yes, since they fled England because they wanted to opress people ad they weren't allowed to in England.
Nor Holland I believe.

Personally, I think the Vikings should have tried harder with their colony :)

I've got a beard, and am a hobbyist with both the Bastard Sword (hand and a half light broad sword) and battle axe. Forged them myself in a home made charcoal kiln.

Now back on topic, it does appear that just about everyone in those days were more direct in their religious fanaticism than they are today. The superficial history books say that they went to the Americas seeking religious freedom, but in reality it was to create a theocracy following their rules. Not free at all.

There are many alternative history books saying "what if" some single different thing happened and a completely different world followed on from that. One without the Abrahamic religions would probably suit me more.

What would a Simonite* world be like, I wonder...

*Simon the Magician. Cult leader concurrent with the Reform Jew Activist Jesus of Nazareth. His cult was bigger at first, but fragmented and faded after he died and didn't resurrect.

The First thing You should ask Yourself is:

Why would All the Apostles of Jesus go to thier own deaths for a Lie
