Trump is a singularly unpopular president. Repealing the ACA is a singularly unpopular move, and the Republicans are doing their best to let everyone know just how little they actually care for what's best for the country by sticking to both.

The Democrats won't be "getting slaughtered". Quite the opposite.

Trump is a bit of a Black Swan. There is a lot of the Trump coalition which is unique to him. And most of the Republicans have been fairly clear that they don't like him.

I don't seen huge swings in Republican to Democrat changes in the Congress (or vice versa). Most of the Republican leaning areas are already represented by a Republican, likewise with the Democratic. Most of the country is so polarized right now that it would be very hard for a Democrat to pick up a Republican seat in a Republican leaning area (and vice versa). They are a handful of congressmen which are the wrong party for the seat they hold but only a handful. And in the case of the Senate, the 2018 map favors the Republicans. I expect a slight shift. Which way it goes will be determined by events closer to the election. And don't forget local issues can be a huge factor.

Doesn't stop them from being complicit in his policy failures, though.

Republicans have jumped on the Trump train. Sometimes more, sometimes less enthusiastically, but definitely not with any serious intent to actually do something about him.

Please cite a specific POLICY failure.

The ACA Repeal. The "it's actually a travel ban" travel restrictions.

Either of which congress members could disavow if needed. The aca repeal (which is actually quite popular in republican areas) could be disowned if needed since it hasn't come up for a vote i.e. They can get away with saying whatever is politically convenient at election time. However if congress gets its act together and actually does their jobs, they will have to take a stand. The travel ban ( very popular in republican areas) isn't going to be voted on at all so they will be able to get away with saying whatever is politically expedient on this one as well.

The AHCA doesn't have above 40% support in a single state in the country.

Where are these "Republican Areas" you speak of exactly?

The GOP base may have a generalized vague high level of support for "get rid of that OBAMAcare thing, because OBAMA! BOOOO!" but face them with the actual practical mechanics of that and they hate what they see.

The ACA Repeal.

0bamaCare was an expensive disaster. It would have to be repealed eventually, and the longer it was allowed to drag on, the more expensive and disastrous it would have been. They lied to get it passed, they knew it would blow up after 0bama was safely out of office, and it was starting to blow up even before that.

Such a huge disaster that after promising to repeal it for the last 6ish years, hell after actually trying over 50 times, as soon as they actually have both the numbers and a President who has vowed to repeal it, they have failed misreably to do so.

Hell, they aren't even willing to publically talk about it anymore.

If it were actually the disaster that the Republican rhetoric says it is, it would have been replaced/repealed months ago.
