So what's up with this Koala thing? It seems that one of your government waste groups down there is making international headlines claiming the government is wasting money on Koala diplomacy. Apparently they spent about $400,000? What's the context of that? Did they get anything useful in return? Even if it was just good will. Good will from the right person (the key word is right) could be worth $400,000+ in the long run. Any signs of that or is this waste group correct?

I had to google it myself. The article was in a UK newspaper. They added up the cost of sending some to Singapore plus supplying some to the G20 for hugs, and a few other things. Like all government expenditures it was probably padded out as much as possible. In the scale of the overall cost of hosting the G20 it would be a minor component, but separated out it isn't a good look.

This sounds a great deal like the Chinese "Panda Diplomacy". Since Koalas look quite cute (considering that they're nature's druggies), it my not be much of a surprise that Australia is trying to capitalize on them in order to raise their international political status.

As for the druggies comment, it's true. Eucalyptus leaves contain a toxin that is lethal to most animals. Koalas, however, have adapted so it's actually a euphoric hallucinogenic to them. This is why they're either slow or grumpy, they're either high or seeking their next fix.
Ain't nature weird?
