imagine someone nukes mekka
where mekka once was theres only a big hole deep down to the mantle lava coming up no more khabba no more valley to throw rocks, no mountain just a big caldera to the mantel, lava welling up mekka is gone could islam survive that ? 1 of the pillars of islam is the hadj without mekka no hadj can islam survive loosing mekka ? |

Islam could survive losing Mecca if it was nuked, but the end result would be religious warfare to a degree that would make the Battle of the Somme seem like a spat in a children's playground.
The American equivalent might be someone nuking Mount Rushmore and the city of Washington. Command would devolve (although quite a few people would want to re-direct control to themselves) but the actual result would be a nation willing to make total war to the point that not even small children would be spared for the first couple of years. Mecca is important to Islam because of its historical/mythological heritage. It is Mecca which is the Lodestone of Islam and which keeps all of the various factions and groups at least partially on speaking terms with each other. Should it fall, then the world would burn in war. ~~~~~~

Of course it would survive. Various religious leaders would just make a bunch of pronouncements on what "God's Will" was now that this event had occurred, everyone would shift their rituals, and just keep going.
You can't can wipe out an ideology by destroying a physical location. (Although there are days when I harbor suspicions that it would be in the best interests of the species to evacuate the entire middle east and then turn all the holy sites into radioactive glass plates just to stop people fighting over the damn places... but then I have little doubt they'd declare the radioactive glass plates to be sacred ground and start donning radiation suits to fight over who got to go prove their piety by visiting/controlling them anyway) |
