According to the John Hopkins website, the total number of cases just surged to 60,000+ today.

Sigh.

Feb. 12 data is provisional - 13,332 new cases are due to the new diagnosis classification adopted by Hubei starting on Feb. 12

Confirmed vs the belief that there is serious levels of under reporting based on social media type reports from within China.

Really it will only go bad if it gets into Africa or the sub continent. China has it contained. In a large population admitadly, but contained.

Just FYI, I understand that 60,000 people infected will not be that significant even if there is a 100% fatality rate. China has about one million births per year. If the number infected doubled ten times with 100% fatalities, then China would still be losing less 5% of its population. Mao killed far more. However; the fact that China's communist party is willing to quarantine and lock down over 50 million people suggests that they are not sanguine about it. Even more alarming are reports that about 5 million people fled the region before the lockdown.

Of course the new diagnosis classification is a defacto admission that they were under counting the number infected. They might still be under counting. The new diagnosis method relies on a CAT scan which provokes curiosity about what the disease does to the body that it can be identified by imaging. Getting a CAT scan is fairly common in the US with a normal wait time of about an hour. I do not know how common this technology is in China. Eventually; the number of cases that are confirmed will be limited by their resources.

While China seems to be coping, what happens if places like India, North Korea and Africa get infected? Of course the AGW theologians would consider a disease that kills off a few billion people a good thing.

Ah Fly.

Spoken like somebody who really has no idea what they are talking about, and doesn't care.

It's essentially a chest infection, that also leads to secondary chest infections.

If you were to verbally replace Coronavirus with Flu you would essentially still be correct.

Like many chest infections this Coronavirus creates mucas and crap in the lungs. The particulars of the locations, amounts, and crap, are diagnostically significant.

However, like any infection, it is unlikely to be able to diagnose the mild cases so no, there will not be a sudden increase in case numbers from chest scans. Nor does it mean that they were under diagnosing. More likely it was being over diagnosed.

There could be a jump soon as the Chinese democratic (laugh) conference is coming up. Delegates from all over China arrive to have meetings, talk fests, and to pretend to vote. They may take the virus home with them.

This is not a "reputable" source, but the information on Sulphur emissions is interesting:

https://www.ccn.com/coronavirus-death-s ... ed-bodies/

Even if this speculation is true, then the fatalities are only an order of magnitude higher than official reports. More importantly, the normal mortality rate for the region would be on the order of about a million people per year or 20,000 per week. It is probable that the Chinese are merely being extra cautious by cremating everyone that they are not certain didn't have Coronavirus. However; it is concerning.

Definitely time to read THE LAST CENTURION.

Hm, according to the Windy site, the largest concentration of SO2 is in Pittsburg, USA. I take it as an indication of hidden American death camps in Pennsylvania?

It is utterly ridiculous to assume, that cremating bodies - even thousands of them - would create any significant amount of SO2. Wuhan is a large steel processing center of China. The amount of fuel, burned by its industry is larger by several orders of magnitude.

Stop trying to play pre-apocalyptic Rambo, will ya?

I read enough of Ringo books, to know that this guy is interesting to read only until he start another political rant about those-he-doesn't-like. Then usually everything is failing apart really quickly. Oh, and he is totally incapable of ever creating an interesting antagonist. Short of some zombies, no Ringo-created antagonists ever were well-written and interesting.

Sorry if I hurt your feeling, but the guy that managed to turn a Bolo novel (A BOLO NOVEL!) into the political rant aren't exactly an example of very interesting writer.
