Ahhh, the reflexive delusion of the conservative Trumpian, seeing grand and subtle strategies where only stupidity, ignorance and reflexive naysaying exist.

To be exact, what else Trump could do? Start to bomb Turkey?

Oh well, if shortening the front is what the Germans crave,
Let's shorten it to very end - the length of Fuhrer's grave.

I mean, US troops in Eastern Syria became logistically unsustainable. How could USA support them without Turkey help? It would be... illogical to rely on Turkey to continue to support troops which main purpose was protecting the territories Turkey wants to take.

The only way out of this may be an agreement with Russia and Assad government to establish supply lines from the coast. But since the US politic for a last decades was "we better suffer, but never, never, NEVER admit that Russia have any rights or interests!" this was out of question too.

I don't know, not withdraw the troops? You know, just a thought.

Also, in regards to the letter he wrote: Apparently, Erdogan's reaction upon receiving it was to throw it in the bin and give the go-ahead for the operations.
Donald Trump, Master Negotiator at work, everyone!

And how those troops should be supplied? Let me guess - through... Turkey? Yeah, right: troops send to deter Turkey would have their logistic going through Turkey, what could go wrong?

Are you serious right now?

The only reason this whole clusterfuck is going on is because Trump, on his own, for no good reason decided to fuck over the Kurds. Had he not done so, had he for once in his career as an intelligence failure in chief not meddled with a status quo Putin didn't like, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

But he did, so we do.

I repeat: what exactly was the choice? Left troops in Syria, without any serious means to do anything besides "loudly protest" any Turkish incursion? You could not assume that troops would be ready to fight till the end if they have no logistical support, and their best possible chances is to ask Russian for evacuation.

YES.

Because if you don't move those troops out of the way there IS NO freaking incursion. Turkey wasn't going in while US troops were in the line of fire, they went in only after Trump publicly announced he was moving the troops aside SO THAT TURKEY COULD ATTACK.

How the hell are you not understanding this?

Trump went against the recommendations of almost literally EVERYONE in the entire US government and military command to make this idiot call. The status quo was working PERFECTLY. It was doing exactly what it was supposed to be doing.

But we all get that Russia is REALLY happy he decided to blow up the United States entire strategic position in the area on a whim after one phone call with one of his autocrat heroes.

And why are you so sure that Turkey would have any problems with putting US troops in the line of fire? Especially considering that their vanguard was local supporters, so Turkey could always claim plausible deniability "it wasn't us, it was those stupid locals".

Turkey have no problems with shooting down our warplane in 2015. Or you already forget this? In Turkey consideration, Russia is MUCH more immediate threat than US (since we could beat the hell out of Erdogan without the need to concentrate our forces first). Did this stopped them? No.
