This has been brewing for a long time. My prediction is that this will result in Turkey either withdrawing or being ejpelled from NATO.

Note to NATO allies. You are the ones whose economies will be impacted by a disruption in oil exports from the Persian Gulf. Japan, South Korea and Taiwan are even more dependant.
President Trump really doesn't give a shit because the United States is now energy independent.

China of course is very dependent on Persian Gulf oil. Their Navy does not have the strategic reach to protect their oil tankers.

Perhaps there is some linkage to North Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong? Trump is threatening to torch China's fuel supply at the same time he is imposing tariffs.
