My son has a hi tech cross bow that is powerful and accurate, but is slower to load and has much less range than my compound bow firing carbon fibre arrows.

The simple bow and arrow is a vastly under rated weapon. The cowboys were definately outgunned by the indians until they got revolvers and lever action rifles. Even then the only real advantage was long range accuracy. Of course the Indians could bring indirect fire on cowboys behind cover.
