First off thanks for all the help so far, look at rifling in Rifles first introduced late 18th Century but during the Napoleonic War the British were very reluctant to use it like one poster mention the No No accountants were againest it. Listening to Dune audiobooks has given me some ideas retro Sci Fi does have some ideas too it.

Now how do the Colonist get to the Andromeda Galaxy in the first place, well by accident the main Jump Gate they were using Sling Shot there ships into a new Galaxy. So from Day 1 they had to figure out which Planets were safe,

Which is, frankly, pretty hard, and would required decades of exploration.
