So.. I have no REAL idea if this is possible.. but some corner of my brain is remembering some way of doing this.

This being:
- If you own the book, you can also get a digital version of it, without having to *re-purchase* the E-Version of the book.

Any ideas about this.. is this publisher specific... etc etc.
((I own all the Safehold series books up to this point and am looking to get them transfered onto my *ibooks* iphone app if possible))

Oh, it's quite possible, but it does require explicit setup by the publisher. There are many ways to do this, but to the best of my knowledge, none of the big fiction publishers actually use them.

Baen's Books have many e books that you can legally download for free, plus there are a number of third party sites, some legal some doubtful. If you have a hard copy then you are ethically correct even if in some cases legally suspect. Our local library has Safehold hard covers that contain DVDs of all in the series so far, easily copied using Calibre.

My first thought was a unique code in each book that could be redeemed online, like some computer companies do (one example being Nintendo which used to do Nintendo Points, redeemable via inputting a code bundled with the game in question), but in the Internet and Computer Program age, the chance of someone managing to calculate a code and claim the download, although minuscule, cannot be ruled out. The problem gets worse with second-hand or library books.

A second way is to link the dead-tree version to the download at the point of order/purchase. Although it would be easiest to do purely on-line, it could be done in normal shots using one-shot codes that are activated upon purchase and remain ready to use for a limited time.

The third way... well, that's as far as I got.

I quite liked how RFCs hardcover books used to have a CD with previous books on them.

Made it worth the extra cost to actually get the hardcover version.

What I really appreciate from Baen is the unlimited free access they grant to 100% disabled military veterans.
