Prepare to welcome our new Alien Overlords, of course...
Seriously...I don't know. It would depend if they were trying to communicate with us (and what they were saying), size of the ship (I figure if we can spot it 60 days out, it's pretty substantial), and what our 'world leaders' were doing (probably squabbling among themselves). I'd like to think I wouldn't change my life a lot, given that whatever was going to happen was beyond my power to influence. Of course, if they announced that they were coming to destroy us all, I'd probably blow my all retirement money on (as the Comedian George Carlin once said) "P**** and Beer." Excellent question and thank you! So many things enter into it. The fact that we detected the alien starship that far out indicates several things all by itself. They are ...
Assuming the aliens wanted us to see them? Which leads to many other logic paths. Why? Fear? Forewarning? Communication potential? And again why so? Nasty? Friendly? And all of this only covers a little bit of it. Just the type and fashion of their detection raises so many additional questions. Assuming space aliens do not think like humans. Just me. As the other guys were mentioning, if we could detect the ship that far out we can assume a couple things. 1 The aliens wanted us to see them and they have absolutely no reason to fear us at all. Also i would wager they know what our culture is like having taken the time to observe us for a while and they have decided that a intervention is needed to break us out of the psychotic episodes we are in. |

Speculation galore:
The first thing that will happen is that the internet will have a meltdown. We will see an upsurge in sects, cults and nutjobs proclaiming either proclaiming that our alien overlords have come to uplift us OR they will proclaim that the world is coming to an end. People will start to bunker up on foodstuffs, leading to incidents of riots and looting here and there, possibly a state of emergency will be declared where this happens. The survivalists takes a vacation to their bunkers. The media will trot out theory after theory from their pet 'experts', and each time it gets more and more ridiculous to create headlines. The politician will be in a tizzy and they will polarized in 2 big blocks, the optimists and the pessimists with a very small amount of 'wait and see' politicians being sidelined. The military will gear up and call in reservists. Nutcases will do what nutcases do (ie. nothing good). The more moderate religious leaders will debate whether the aliens believe in God or not and how to welcome them. The not so moderate religious will decry that the aliens are Satans spawn (which kind of means that the aliens must believe in God). The rich and powerful expends huge amounts of money to set up contingency plans. The economy takes a huge hit. The aliens will be inundated with RF energy from everyone with a modicum of technological knowledge and a crackpot mentality, drowning out most of the communications attempts from NASA et al. --- Jack of all trades and destructive tinkerer. Anyone who have simple solutions for complex problems is a fool. |

Joat42 has hit it. Only it would be much more worserer than that. The bottom line is that ANY space alien capable of getting here from where ever would be so much more advanced than us that we would not stand a snowball's chance in hell. Yikes! Just making contact would change the planet totally and probably NOT for the good. Just me. HB of CJ (oldest coot)

AT that point there is not a whole lot anyone can do. I do know that all major world governments have contingency plans for just such a case and they have set those plans up for coordination. That being said i really hope i have someone in charge who is extremely logical minded and not given towards irrational speculation on unfounded theories. Other than that all i could do is to do some stockpiling of my own. |

A visiting/fighting ship that size changes lots of things. Why so big? That raises many other questions. Slow boat? Fast boat? What is inside? Why? Colonists, (not good) or infrastructure for a long stay? Also not good. Dropping out of Warp with that long of final approach to get to Earth Orbit also says lots.
Very advanced, but maybe not that advanced? If they were really bad and that advanced we all would be taken over without us even knowing about it. And if that advanced, why take us over? They can go elsewhere. So many different questions indeed. Never assume. We would have to wait and just see. What would I do? As far as the space aliens, nothing. Nothing I can do. As far as the world disruption, wars, panic, stupidity and etc.., perhaps quite a lot. We live in SW OR USA. About 43N, 123W. Kinda. We are here for lots of potential reasons.
