In 1969 I did some programming of a mainframe using Fortran and punch cards. Not easy to use, and a scientific calculation, that a PC with Excel would do virtually instantly, took hours (if a vacuum tube didn't blow).

That is actually a picture of the Maneuvering space (the engine room control center) on a nuclear sub. Albeit this one is more of a mock up. Typically used for training purposes.

The left hand side, where the large handwheels are, is the throttleman's station. He controls the main engines and the gauges on the panel monitor the steam plant.

The center console is the reactor plant control panel, which just like it says, controls the reactor. The reactor operator sits there and monitors the reactor, operates pumps and reactor controls.

The right hand panel is the electric plant control panel. The electrical operator sits there and controls the major power generating equipment, ship's battery, major breakers and monitors the electric plant.

Huh, that might explain some oddities yes.
