As for basing ... while I think it is theoretically possible, it'd be far too inefficient and far too great a drain on the thruster bunkerage.
At any rate, they'd completely screw up any flight plans in the general area of their ground stations.

Far more efficient to base the LACs in space, and use conventional small craft to supply and support their bases from dirtside or orbital stations.

You could put counter grav into a LAC to allow it to land planetside without a wedge of thruster, but I agree with you that it would be better to keep the LAC's based in space.

Well you could, technically, yeah ... but the necessary contragrav unit(s) to both lift the LAC the necessary amount and provide redundancy would take up a hefty amount of mass that you'd probably prefer to have available for other purposes.

Well, one idea would be that (assuming you had a need to put LACs on a planet and they could survive the trip) you would have a separate piece of equipment--an LAC "dry dock" or LAC tug--that's basically some huge countergravs, a power supply, and a big piece of deck to park the LACs on. I'm thinking a big hunk of flat, metal plate here. Something ugly and effective (like a barge). Probably you want some sort of dome or other airfoil to cover the LAC and cut down on the wind resistance or wind damage.

Why would one want to put a space warship on a planet? Perhaps (for unspecified reasons) it was built there. Perhaps it crashed or had a forced landing (and it's worth salvaging). Perhaps you could obtain a decisive tactical advantage by hiding LACs on a planet (or airless moon). If it's airless do you need countergrav to liftoff, except for tactical reasons?

(And since we aren't talking about the forthcoming book, should this thread be broken off to its own topic?)

You want countergrav for liftoff so that your wedge safety perimeter clears the surface and any structures.

Wedges function in atmosphere ... but trying to activate a wedge when it will materialize inside of something is a bad idea, and the hardwired safeties probably prevent it.

The discussion is a related topic branch.
We're discussion possible means of LAC basing, and LACs are going to figure prominently in the defense of the Quadrant.

Hi all,

Although not a snippet Simon and Schuster have the following at:

#18 in the multiply-bestselling Honor Harrington series.

Wrong number? There are two sides to any quarrel . . . unless there are more.

Michelle Henke, Queen Elizabeth of Manticore's first cousin, Honor Harrington's best friend, and the commanding officer of Manticore's Tenth Fleet, is just a bit surprised when a messenger arrives from the Mobius System to inform her that the Mobius Liberation Front is prepared to rise in rebellion against the hated regime President Svein Lombroso. She can understand why anyone would want to rebel against someone like Lombroso, but why tell her about it? After all, she has problems of her own, like the minor matter of a life-or-death war against the Solarian League.

Michelle has just handed the "invincible" Solarian League Navy the most humiliating, one-sided defeat in its entire almost thousand-year history in defense of the people of the Star Empire's Talbott Quadrant. But the League is the most powerful star nation in the history of humanity. Its navy is going to be back – and this time with thousands of superdreadnoughts.

Yet she also knows scores of other star systems — some independent, some controlled by puppet regimes, and some simply conquered outright by the Solarian Office of Frontier Security — lie in the League's grip along its frontier with the Talbott Quadrant. As combat spreads from the initial confrontation, the entire frontier has begun to seethe with unrest, and Michelle sympathizes with the oppressed populations wanting only to be free of their hated masters.

And that puts her in something of a quandary when the messenger from Mobius arrives, because someone's obviously gotten a wrong number. According to him, the Mobians’ uprising has been carefully planned to coordinate with a powerful outside ally: the Star Empire of Manticore. Only Manticore — and Mike Henke — have never even heard of the Mobius Liberation Front.

It's a set-up . . . and Michelle knows who's behind it. The shadowy Mesan Alignment has launched a bold move to destroy Manticore's reputation as the champion of freedom. And when the RMN doesn't arrive, when the MLF is brutally and bloodily crushed, no independent star system will ever trust Manticore again.

Mike Henke knows she has no orders from her government to assist any rebellions or liberation movements, that she has only so many ships, which can be in only so many places at a time . . . and that she can't possibly justify diverting any of her limited, outnumbered strength to missions of liberation the Star Empire never signed on for.

She knows that . . . and she doesn't care.

No one is going to send thousands of patriots to their deaths, trusting in Manticoran help that will never come.

Not on Mike Henke's watch.

Enjoy, Poker

Oh god, I freaking HOPE so!

Things are heating up big time and I'm dying to see how they deal with it as the wheels come off of the League.

I'd peg the eARC for sometime November, most likely.

Hi guys,

Ugh the next two novels David's SOF and Eric's ??? will cover roughly the same time period as ART but in different parts of the universe. We may find out how the vote went in Beowulf, perhaps the first Solli commerce raids, but the book after them before we forge much ahead. To quote Commander Binginton of McCale's Navy, "I could just scream!"

Well have a cold one it'll be a while yet before the story through at least two more books moves ahead, sigh! If we're lucky the eARC of the next main line book will come in November or December of 2013, @!$ $%&# it!
